Quietly tucked away in the hills of Ladakh is India's highest national park.
00:21
Scrawling across an area of over 4,400 square kilometers, this park near the Hemis Gonta
00:31
is home to some of the most exotic animals.
00:34
Also known as the Himalayan wolves, they have a thick, woolly, brownish-black coat and prey
00:47
on deer, sheep and other large mammals.
00:52
These animals are solitary by nature and prefer to remain alone.
01:01
So you have to be really lucky to spot one of them at Hemis.
01:13
Known as the king of the mountains, their agile bodies and strong build help them scale
01:18
mountains easily.
01:27
Usually seen in small groups, this regal bird can often be spotted scouring the skyline.
01:36
Easily identified by their long, curved horns, the reddish-brown fur on a shapu may fade
01:46
in near-freezing temperatures.
01:47
The best time to visit Hemis National Park is from May to October.
01:58
And if you are planning a trip during June or July, try to catch the Hemis Festival at
02:03
the Hemis Gomba Monastery.
