Emergency SOS via satellite is a new safety feature for iPhone 14 users that can get you help when you don't have a cellular signal. We got to demo this feature for ourselves, and here's how it works.
Transcript
00:00 One of the most important features of the iPhone 14
00:02 and iPhone 14 Pro is emergency SOS via satellite.
00:05 And the idea is to get you in contact
00:07 with emergency services in case something goes wrong.
00:10 And we're gonna give you a live demo
00:12 of what it's like right now.
00:14 How it works is actually pretty intuitive.
00:16 You start what you would usually start an emergency,
00:18 and that's 911.
00:19 So we go into the dialer,
00:22 hit that,
00:25 and you're gonna see an option come up
00:28 on the right-hand side
00:29 that gives you an option to text
00:31 with emergency services via satellite.
00:34 And then you have an option to report your emergency,
00:37 and then it's gonna walk you through a series of questions.
00:40 And the idea is to get a better sense
00:41 of what the emergency is and where you are.
00:44 So let's say there is a car or vehicle issue.
00:49 And that it's me.
00:51 Crash.
00:54 Is anyone trapped?
00:55 Thankfully, no.
00:56 Is anyone injured?
00:59 Yes.
01:00 Notify emergency contacts.
01:03 This is really important
01:04 because if you have emergency contacts on your phone,
01:07 Apple is going to notify them at the same time
01:09 that they're trying to get in contact
01:11 with emergency services.
01:12 So we're gonna hit notify.
01:13 And now it says poor connection.
01:17 But if I turn the phone around,
01:19 you can see that it's easier to get a connection this way.
01:24 And right away, you can see that the text messages come up
01:28 and it gives you this guidance up here.
01:30 Keep pointing at satellite to send and receive.
01:33 And it already tells you the type of information
01:38 that they have.
01:38 It's a car or vehicle issue.
01:40 And then the information that's sent,
01:43 including your medical ID, your current location,
01:46 and the emergency questionnaire.
01:49 Now we just have to wait.
01:50 And it's important to recognize
01:52 that this is not regular text.
01:53 This is not cell service
01:55 where it goes back and forth very quickly.
01:57 So you have to be patient,
01:58 which I know is not easy in the case of emergency.
02:01 But in this case, you're off the grid.
02:02 So this is much better than nothing.
02:04 In some cases, you'll have to continue
02:06 to move the phone around.
02:07 But in this case, we don't, which is good.
02:09 At this point, we're just waiting for a response
02:11 and we just got one.
02:12 So you have reached the emergency relay center.
02:14 I am reviewing the information you provided.
02:17 Describe the location of the emergency.
02:19 So in this case, I'll say I'm on Hill.
02:24 (upbeat music)
02:27 You can see that it's sending right here.
02:35 And again, you have to be a little bit patient.
02:37 What's good about this is that Apple
02:38 is hiring its own emergency services personnel
02:41 that is going to, in some cases,
02:42 depending on where you are,
02:44 they'll be in direct contact with dispatchers
02:46 while they're talking to you.
02:48 And they're also gonna remind you
02:49 to keep the responses short
02:50 because you want the least amount of data
02:52 being sent and received in a situation like this.
02:55 So turn right to stay connected to satellite.
02:57 Make sure we maintain that connection.
03:01 There we go.
03:04 Here we go.
03:05 I'm reaching out to emergency services now.
03:07 Please describe your injuries.
03:09 Let's see what kind of advice that we get.
03:18 But it's good that they're already reaching out
03:21 to emergency services while they're trying
03:23 to gather more information.
03:24 Okay, local responders have been notified.
03:29 Do not move unless it's absolutely necessary.
03:32 So that's good advice.
03:33 And if you want to end it,
03:35 you can just click end right here.
03:37 This is just our first look at emergency SOS
03:39 via satellite for the iPhone 14.
03:41 Stay tuned for more news at Tom's Guide.
