00:00 US President Joe Biden sealed new security cooperation with Japan and South Korea as
00:07 he hosted the leaders of the Asian countries in three-way talks at Camp David.
00:12 Biden also praised the political courage of South Korean President Yun So-kyo and Japanese
00:17 Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in turning the page on their historical animosity.
00:23 Japan and South Korea have had strained relations dating back to Japan's 1910-1945 occupation
00:29 of Korea.
00:30 After the summit, the White House statement read, "We do so at a time of unparalleled
00:35 opportunity for our countries and our citizens and at a hinge point of history when geopolitical
00:41 competition, the climate crisis, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and nuclear
00:46 provocations cast us."
00:49 The three nations have agreed to a new security pledge committing them to consult with each
00:54 other in the event of a security crisis or threat in the Pacific.
00:58 Under the pledge, the three allies agreed to share information via an emergency hotline
01:03 between Washington, Tokyo and Seoul.
01:06 The security pledge comes against the backdrop of China's recent assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific
01:11 region, particularly Beijing's vow to retake the autonomous island of Taiwan by force if
01:17 necessary.
01:19 The leaders also issued a sharply worded statement about Beijing's actions in the South China
01:24 Sea where China has claimed territory that according to international law belongs to
01:29 other countries.
01:30 China has also pledged to conduct military exercises in the region which could further
01:34 escalate tensions.
01:35 The three nations also agreed to set up an early warning system to share information
01:41 and coordinate on possible disruptions to global supply chains as well as to confront
01:46 and overcome economic coercion.
01:48 They also promised to hold trilateral summits annually.
01:52 One of several regional security challenges discussed during the Camp David talks was
01:56 North Korea.
01:57 The three leaders spoke forcefully in remarks to reporters about Pyongyang's nuclear and
02:02 other threats and said that they would cooperate to counter them.
02:06 They have also agreed to hold trilateral military training exercises annually and to share real-time
02:11 information on North Korean missile launches by the end of 2023.
