00:00 Congressman Adam Schiff paid a visit to Bakersfield on Wednesday. The 30th
00:04 district representative who's running for the U. S. Senate hosting a round
00:07 table conversation with local Latino business leaders. 23 abc's Brianna Polk
00:12 has more on what they talked about when it comes to economic and other issues
00:16 right here in the Central Valley. I'm here uh to to listen to learn to find
00:21 out how I can be of service and how I can be an effective champion of Kerman
00:25 County in the U. S. Senate. Some of the topics discussed during Wednesday's
00:29 round table meeting between Congressman Adam Schiff and local leaders where
00:33 workforce needs funding for public schools and non profit organizations
00:38 among others. When it comes to the concerns wired around funding for
00:41 education, Schiff says one of the things that he has been working on is fully
00:45 funding the individuals with disabilities legislation that requires
00:50 us to make sure that we're fully funding special education. Um we have
00:55 never done that the way that we promised. If the federal government
00:57 would do that, it would I think provide a lot of the resources schools need
01:01 for all kinds of programming. Another topic of discussion between Schiff and
01:05 Kern County leaders that many find to be critically important is the
01:09 implementation of additional resources for agricultural workers. It's I think
01:13 vitally important that we make sure that those who are producing that food
01:17 have access to health care, they have access to broadband, they can get a
01:21 good education that their needs are being met. Uh and uh and then we have
01:26 the kind of immigration reform also that makes it possible for people to
01:30 come to work here to raise a family to become citizens. So these are all
01:34 issues that I'm deeply interested in, have been working on for a long time
01:38 considering Kern County has many rural communities. Schiff says he also finds
01:42 it important to improve health care access in these areas. When a hospital
01:46 shuts down a rural area, it means that people literally die because they can't
01:50 get to hospital on time. Uh and I want to make sure that we change the
01:54 economics so that rural health care can not only survive but thrive. Schiff
01:58 says he felt it was important to learn what the community of current is trying
02:02 to accomplish and ask how he can help in order to really understand the needs
02:07 of our community in Bakersfield Brianna Polk 23 abc News connecting you
