00:00 If you have a goal of running a 5K, you can do it in Taft on September 10th at Taft Rails
00:05 to Trails at the Oil Worker Memorial.
00:08 Fueling Hope 5K, the Fueling Hope 5K will raise awareness for fetal alcohol spectrum
00:13 disorder and raise money for FASD United.
00:16 23 ABC's Raquel Calo spoke to the host of the event.
00:24 This will be FASD United's third year hosting the Run event.
00:28 They are a national non-profit agency which supports individuals and families living with
00:32 fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
00:34 I spoke to Patti Kasper, an FASD advocate and the host for Fueling Hope 5K.
00:40 She says she lives with FASD, so to her the event is important to let people in Kern County
00:44 know they should be more open and willing to look and recognize the signs and behaviors.
00:49 I want people to know that it's through no fault of their own, it can be very difficult
00:55 to do things that should be easy.
00:58 And that, whatever that task is, is different for everybody.
01:03 Everybody's brain is impacted differently based on the timing of exposure, was it early
01:09 in the pregnancy, late in the pregnancy, throughout the pregnancy, how much at any given time.
01:14 Kasper says the easiest way to register is to go on the website runfasd.org.
01:20 She does recommend that you order by Friday if you want to get your "swag" on time for
01:25 the day of the 5K.
01:26 Kasper says she will be out at a booth with waters, snacks and flyers of her new book
01:31 Sip by Sip, which she released about people diagnosed as adults with fetal alcohol spectrum
01:36 disorders.
01:37 In Taft, Raquel Calo, 23ABC News, connecting you.
