00:48 I'm here with the lead singer, I'm here with the manager.
00:50 But let me start with the lead singer first of all.
00:53 College Boy Jesse, Carnival 2023.
00:56 How has it been, you're in a new role?
00:58 - Yeah, definitely excitement.
01:00 You know, I'm in a new role with the legends.
01:02 And it's a blessing to be here, you know,
01:04 as a young artist and to be working under such greats.
01:07 You know, it's been fun so far.
01:09 I've been seeing my development and I'm grateful.
01:12 - All right, and tell us about your music for 2020
01:15 as you're returning to the stage once again for Carnival
01:18 after two year hiatus.
01:20 - Yeah, so you know, with this new role,
01:22 it comes with the responsibility to create more music.
01:24 So that was the task this season, you know,
01:26 I have to create more music.
01:27 So I released more music than I ever did in any season.
01:30 And that's it.
01:32 We basically released, had some nice collaborations.
01:34 One with the Legend Blacks, one with Destra Garcia,
01:37 and also the one that people know now,
01:39 the one with Young Brother.
01:40 And then some other singles that we did on other rhythms.
01:43 So, so much more music, you know,
01:46 for the new season of 2023.
01:48 - All right, so you mentioned Blacks,
01:50 and let's get right to it.
01:51 It's the first Carnival, Blacks is not here.
01:54 You have a heavy mantle.
01:55 I know you guys were related and everything.
01:57 How was this whole process for you, Jesse?
01:59 - Mixed feelings, you know,
02:02 it's hard to lose someone close to you.
02:04 But also it's an opportunity now
02:07 for us to keep his legacy alive through music.
02:10 And also with the legacy of the band.
02:12 So that is basically the role that I'm playing, you know,
02:14 to one generation onto the next, you know.
02:18 And yeah, so definitely a sad one losing him,
02:21 but at the same time, we're grateful that he left lessons,
02:24 and he also left great music for us to carry on.
02:27 - All right, so next to me,
02:28 I don't know if you'll call him like the engine man
02:31 for the band, I don't know,
02:32 but you are custom seeing him all over Juice Man.
02:35 How is the season going?
02:37 - It is nice.
02:39 A little less hectic because you know,
02:41 Blacks is not here, but with college,
02:43 we will see a great future,
02:45 and we'll see brighter days ahead,
02:48 coming to come, so don't worry, we'll be all right.
02:50 - How is the transition for the band?
02:51 Because you know, for Carnival,
02:53 we've seen so many changes,
02:54 but this band, whether it was the All Stars,
02:57 or it goes by the former name,
02:59 I mean, you guys have been around for so long,
03:01 at staple in the Caribbean, basically, you know,
03:04 how have y'all maintained this heavy man?
03:07 - We like family, I just see the guys,
03:11 Basie, Slice, Steve, Jacob,
03:13 I see these guys more than one family,
03:15 so we tight on and off, you know, the stage,
03:19 so that keeps us together a lot.
03:22 - And of course, I have to ask you
03:25 about the passing of Blacks,
03:26 and I mean, we had so many tributes
03:28 that happened over the past year,
03:30 and so on, how was that for you,
03:32 and that transition, and really steering the entire team,
03:36 you know, towards the future?
03:38 - Personally, I am still trying to comprehend,
03:41 and understand the whole thing,
03:42 but with God's grace, and a good band,
03:46 and a beautiful, young, upcoming, talented singer,
03:50 and Jesse, I see him the bright future for the band.

06:23 - Amazing, amazing, I mean, yo,
06:26 it's so good to be in army for the first time,
06:29 you know what I mean?
06:30 And the energy was just superb, amazing,
06:33 ecstatic, phenomenal.
06:36 - Well, you've had a fantastic year,
06:38 you're having a fantastic year,
06:39 you also had a great year last year,
06:41 I mean, you're a writer, you're a producer,
06:43 you're a performer, how is it managing all these roles?
06:47 - You know, God, God,
06:49 I really just, you know,
06:52 having a passion for it, you know,
06:53 it's the only way we even able to do all of this stuff,
06:56 you know, just that passion and that drive,
06:58 and just the love for soca music, you know?
07:02 - All right, so I saw you in Young Kings,
07:03 I mean, you're doing your song,
07:05 Hall of Fame is a huge song,
07:06 I mean, I hear the Christ so origins in this
07:08 and everything like that,
07:10 tell us how the song came about.
07:12 - Brilliant, truly, I am somebody believing
07:14 in being unmentionably great,
07:17 you know, people like David Rutter,
07:19 you know, Shadow, Sparrow,
07:21 all of them who I grew up on as well, you know?
07:23 And the song was really just paying homage to them
07:26 and paying homage to the culture.
07:28 During COVID, I was doing so much research on culture,
07:31 I just figured out that what we have is so rich
07:34 and so potent, and it just made me feel like,
07:36 yo, I wanna highlight this,
07:38 I wanna kinda talk about this in a song,
07:41 showing how much I have a love for culture,
07:43 you know what I mean?
07:44 And Hall of Fame just, you know, happened that way, you know?
07:48 - What was your reaction?
07:49 Because you studied about the appreciation of the culture
07:52 and clearly the fans appreciate
07:54 your appreciation of the culture.
07:55 - Yeah, well, you know,
07:57 we are led to believe sometimes that, you know,
07:59 as youths, we're not into culture,
08:01 or we, you know,
08:03 youths, we're not really into that,
08:04 and we're not into this,
08:05 but, you know, seeing youths react to Hall of Fame
08:07 shows me that deep in our DNA,
08:09 there is something there that is indigenous to us
08:13 and they react into it,
08:14 so which means culture in your DNA,
08:17 you're feeling it because it's a part of you, you know,
08:19 so it gives me hope that the youths
08:22 will take this to a different level, you know?

09:30 all the food and drink, my family.
09:33 It's beautiful to be back home.
09:36 - So, of course, I know you love the music,
09:39 you love the culture, you do hosting and so on.
09:41 How has your trip been since you've arrived in Trinidad?
09:43 - Oh, it's been great.
09:44 I actually came here early so I could see
09:48 my friend Tedison John's show, "Stripped," at Napa,
09:52 which was amazing.
09:53 And hopefully it becomes a staple of Carnival season.
09:58 But, you know, I just got married,
10:02 so I had to bring, thank you very much,
10:04 I had to bring my wife to Trinidad for the first time.
10:07 And she's enjoying it too.
10:08 She's Puerto Rican, so we got Puerto Rico
10:10 and Trinidad and Barbados, it's a whole Caribbean,
10:12 up top, up top, downtown, everything.
10:14 - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:15 - So it's just, it's great.
10:17 It really is good to be back.
10:18 Like, you know, if you think of Nylah and Skinny's come home,
10:23 that's how I feel inside.
10:26 Like, you don't know what you have until it's gone.
10:30 And we, honestly, we are fortunate to be from here
10:35 and have Carnival.
10:36 It's special, it makes us special.
10:38 - Of course, so we know you're a fan of Carnival.
10:42 You're in the acting scene as well,
10:43 and you have a few shows going on.
10:45 You have a popular CW show for all those who may not know.
10:49 Tell them about the show and tell them about the season.
10:52 - So, Dynasty is on the CW in America,
10:55 but on Netflix around the world.
10:59 We just finished season five, 108 episodes.
11:04 That's the last season of Dynasty.
11:07 So I moved on to another show.
11:09 I'm on a show called The Game,
11:11 which is on Paramount Plus.
11:13 And then other than that, I'm in any number of movies,
11:17 many of which are on Netflix
11:19 and some more that are coming out now.
11:22 So I'm blessed, I cannot complain, you know.

12:00 How did you enter the soca scene?
12:02 Why did you decide to jump out this year?
12:04 - Well, you know, it's always good to try new things.
12:06 And I like to challenge myself when I say,
12:08 "Well, you know, the soca is a challenge,
12:10 "so let me just get at it one time."
12:12 - All right, so you have a couple of songs out.
12:15 Tell us about it.
12:16 Who wrote it?
12:17 And Tempa, you have some lyrics here.
12:18 Explain the lyrics to the people out there.
12:20 - Well, the Pandora Box, it was created by Lady Lava,
12:25 myself, Dion, Explicit, Mevon.
12:27 You know, we just built our whole sass vibes.
12:30 It also shouts to Lady Lava, the boss,
12:33 and also Mikkel Teja with the leggo, Lady Lava.
12:36 Again, had a part to play in that as well.

12:43 - How did you feel being accepted
12:45 into the whole soca scene?
12:46 Because I know you are no stranger to the dancehall scene
12:49 in Trinidad and Tobago.
12:51 So come in and have a different transition with you.
12:54 - Well, honestly, I'm really thankful.
12:56 The Lord blessed me abundantly with the talent that I have.
12:59 And you know, I'm really grateful.

13:40 I mean, you all totally dismantled.
13:43 Let me start with you, Faye.
13:44 And how was the atmosphere?
13:46 - Oh, energetic, amazing.
13:47 It reminded me of many, many years ago,
13:50 doing Army Fete and Fire Fete
13:52 and all these different events.
13:53 You know, and it's really nice to see the people come out,
13:56 have a time, no incident, no issue.
13:58 I mean, it is actually the safest event of all.
14:00 So it lived up to its name.
14:02 But the people, they were fantastic.
14:06 - And you are just an amazing crowd controller.
14:09 How exactly you do that?
14:11 - Obia.
14:12 - You all heard it.
14:14 - My kid, I joke, I joke.
14:16 No, I mean, listen.
14:18 I came up in the game when Super Blue,
14:22 Marshall, Ronnie McIntosh, Shadow,
14:26 Show Manchester, like a lot of really great
14:30 stage performers were on stage.
14:32 You had to bring your A game.
14:34 And it was difficult for females
14:35 because women back in the day,
14:38 were meant to wear the shiny outfit,
14:39 come on stage, look cute, whine a little bit.
14:42 And then, you know, they take a little in the backseat
14:44 and then the men come.
14:45 And I sat there and I looked at all these men performing.
14:49 I said, "Boy, why am I going on stage
14:51 "and just whining on the place?"
14:52 And these men, "Point your finger so and crowd run."
14:55 We had in the end, crowd do it.
14:56 "Sit down, do so."
14:57 And I said, "Mm-mm, I want that."
15:00 So I started years ago, you know, working on my skill
15:03 and trying to not just be an artist that's on stage
15:05 for your looks, but also for your prowess and your strength
15:08 and your ability to have your voice heard
15:10 by male and female in the crowd.
15:12 This is what we have today.
15:13 It's a lot of work.
15:14 It doesn't come overnight.
15:15 I've been here for a while.
15:16 - So we have a great crowd controller here.
15:19 And then we have the hard fat man.
15:21 I mean, tell us about the success
15:25 and everything about the song.
15:26 I'm lost for words because it's just huge.
15:29 - Well, I think the success of the song happened
15:31 because the song is a people song.
15:33 It's everybody's song.
15:36 Especially those who come from, well, us,
15:39 who came from the era of what hard fat is,
15:42 what we call a hard fat.
15:43 Back in those days, that wasn't considered a hard fat.
15:45 It was a fat.
15:46 It didn't matter if it was uptown or downtown.
15:48 It had the same intensity.
15:49 Now you find there's different level of,
15:51 this place have it a little more hard
15:53 than this one have it more conserved.
15:55 Those times, whether it be Barbarossa, Koolafet,
15:58 or Poison, or wherever you go,
16:00 Wasafet or Whitco, whatever the case,
16:02 all the fat had the same level of intensity.
16:04 And that was just telling the story and reminding.
16:07 And it was also, you know,
16:09 like us telling the new generation.
16:11 'Cause I remember that sometime ago,
16:13 Faye and I was posting some videos on Instagram
16:16 of like we passed Soka Monarch performances
16:18 and Super Blue, Soka Monarch, and Ronnie Soka Monarch.
16:21 And you see it in the comment section.
16:23 I wasn't born yet, man.
16:24 I wish I was able to experience that.
16:26 So this song was kind of like giving them
16:29 a chance to be a part of what we had then.
16:31 - Yeah, so you talked about the whole change
16:33 of the fat atmosphere and you mentioned Soka Monarch.
16:36 I mean, y'all are both past Soka Monarch winners.
16:39 We don't have Soka Monarch anymore.
16:40 We don't have a lot of the other fats
16:42 on a lot of other events.
16:44 Y'all are business people.
16:45 And those in the front line,
16:47 how do you see that in terms of, you know,
16:49 the Soka industry?
16:50 Is it growth?
16:52 Is it expansion?
16:53 Is it, what is your view?
16:54 - Well, I mean, when they asked for us
16:57 to take over the Soka Monarch, I did it.
16:59 And I believe we were on the verge of actually
17:01 bringing it back and putting it back
17:03 to where it was supposed to be.
17:05 I think people are not understanding.
17:07 In order for Soka Monarch or any competition,
17:10 any, in fact, any business to run,
17:13 your product has to be proper.
17:14 If you treat your product like it's valuable,
17:17 then you're gonna get the best out of that product
17:18 and your clientele will grow.
17:20 Our issue has always been,
17:21 we've never placed emphasis on our product
17:24 because we still refer to our artists as local artists,
17:28 even though they travel.
17:30 But we refer to other international artists
17:32 as international artists, even though they're local.
17:35 Because in their area, they're local, you know?
17:37 So when we change the mindset
17:40 and have Trinidadians and Tabagunians understand
17:43 you have superstars in your midst,
17:45 discovered and undiscovered,
17:48 then you will understand the benefit
17:50 of every single avenue, platform, that you have available.
17:54 I said to somebody one time,
17:56 Soka Monarch started as a showcase.
17:58 When my dad did it back in the day,
18:00 I was, when he did the tribute to Kim Sabini,
18:03 I was one of the angels on stage.
18:05 I was like about 13 or 14 years old.
18:07 And then it morphed from a platform of showcase
18:12 to a platform of enhancing,
18:14 where I was able to now go from being an addition
18:18 to my dad's staff on stage,
18:20 and a prop to actually being a competitor
18:23 and perform and compete alongside my father.
18:26 Then it moved from that,
18:28 and it started to grow into development stage,
18:30 where people like me, I spent years, years,
18:34 coming last in Soka Monarch.
18:36 Feeling proud to come last,
18:37 because at least it meant I was in the finals.
18:39 And then to go and win the Soka Monarch.
18:42 So I understand the process of development
18:46 and enhancing and honing your skills
18:48 that you get from Soka Monarch.
18:49 So I would never knock something
18:50 that actually contributed to my development.
18:52 But at the same time, I will knock it a bit,
18:54 because I think the organizers of Soka Monarch
18:58 dropped the ball.
18:58 - And just to segue in a little bit now,
19:03 a move into road march kind of feeling,
19:06 because you know, we hear in Bungee,
19:07 we hear in this outfit,
19:09 moving towards this road march kind of feeling.
19:12 What's your thoughts?
19:13 How you feel about this?
19:14 If people want it?
19:15 - Well, you know, listen,
19:17 if the song going down good to the people,
19:19 let's let it continue going down good to the people.
19:21 Wherever it travel and it go, it travel and it go.
19:24 I think I just, I'm really, really happy just
19:27 to see people enjoy.
19:28 That was the aim with this song,
19:30 to make people enjoy Soka music at that BPM,
19:35 the way we used to,
19:36 I remember a long time,
19:39 our whole fete, five hours of fete,
19:41 used to be at that tempo.
19:42 It didn't have nothing like groovy.
19:43 Everything was at that speed, right?
19:46 So to be able to get everybody enjoying the music
19:48 at that power level again,
19:50 that was really the real thing for me.
19:52 After that, wherever the music go,
19:53 music will go.
19:54 It's in the people's hands
19:55 and that is the most important thing.
