00:02 - Well, it's intermission time here at Kaiso House
00:15 at the Queen's Park Savannah.
00:16 It's the flagship Calypso tent of Tuko.
00:19 And we've had quite a number of performances
00:21 in the first half.
00:22 We've had some legends and some former Calypso monarchs.
00:26 Now let's take you center stage for those performances.

04:55 - Yeah, interesting in the sense of the title,
04:58 or the theme of the Calypso season, as Tuko has coined it,
05:03 the revolution of Calypso.
05:05 And that is particularly important
05:07 in the context of where we're coming from.
05:10 Calypso-ians, I think, in terms of the entertainment sector,
05:13 they would have been most affected coming out of COVID.
05:16 I mean, the so-called decently would have been able
05:18 to travel, but you know, Calypso,
05:20 being the least ascribed to,
05:22 gets the least play in terms of performances.
05:25 So this year is particularly important
05:27 in terms of trying our best to transform Calypso
05:30 by bringing a lot of production value.
05:32 You know, so in a nutshell,
05:35 the revolution and the concept behind revolution

06:12 to focus on the transition
06:16 because, I mean, the concept or the idea
06:20 that Calypso is dying has to always be placed
06:23 in the context of where we're coming from
06:25 because it's important to rekindle that spirit.
06:27 And in an effort to rekindle that spirit,
06:29 we have to hold on to what some of the greats have done.
06:32 How they have done it.
06:33 Remember them.
06:34 Hold on to their memory and hold them up

06:43 because we have had a lot of greats pass on recently

14:57 After a while with all the crime, I realized we had to, as artists, we have the control to bring that message and that message will stay.
15:08 So I decided to pen this song to bring the power of love, unity, harmony, because like I said, no politician could do it.
15:18 No religion could do it.
15:21 And religion is what divided us.

18:50 Where do you get the time to do all of this?
18:52 Motivated by myself. You know, I have a daughter and I try to be her motivation and I try to be better than who I was every year.
19:03 You know, I stay hungry, I'm always working. Carnival is going on now and I'm recording for 2024, so I don't stop.
19:10 So of course you have a roadmatch contender this year, a collaboration with Marshall. How did that come about this year?
19:17 We had the song for a year and a half going into COVID and we decided that this year would be amazing.
19:24 You know, we have been, Banadier have been since 2006. So to come back and reunite in 2023 is amazing.
19:32 Because he has taught me so much, I've learned from him. I left and I went on my own and I'm able to stand up on my own two feet and reunite with my teacher. It's amazing.
19:44 And of course you've had some success even last year was one of your biggest years. We had Drink Water, you had a collaboration with Nicki Minaj.
19:51 Tell us about that. How did that impact your career?
19:55 First of all, Drink Water has been amazing. It's been global and it's an opportunity for soca music to be seen globally.
20:03 So I feel honored to know that I'm one of the soca artists to do that. But when I got the DM, I got a message from Nicki Minaj and I thought somebody was scamming my phone.
20:13 When I saw the message, she told me, "Hey, I need you to do a verse and you have three days." And I did it in a day.
20:19 I was so excited. I feel so honored. Just to even be on a record with Nicki Minaj is good.
20:27 We are here with the one and only Nyla. Hi, how are you? I'm great, thank you. You're having a fantastic season. Tell us about your music.
20:39 Indeed, it's been amazing since the first of January. Carnival started and it's just been a non-stop pace. I've done about five or six songs for the season.
20:52 They're all doing very well, especially my collaboration with Skinny Fabulous called "Come Home." That's one for the people.
21:00 I think we all love that one. How did that collaboration come about?
21:04 I was working on songs for my album and I started doing this song "Come Home" and I thought it was so eclectic.
21:11 But I didn't realize that I had the aggression to carry this song. I was thinking who could really bring that vibe.
21:18 Skinny and I had worked together before and I thought he would be perfect for it. We never released this song so I was like, "This is an opportunity to do our first collab."
21:27 I said yes and he fell in love and the rest is history.
21:31 How are you feeling about all of this road march? First Saturday since 10am.

21:44 Their response has been overwhelmingly amazing. I want to say thank you to everybody. We're going for the road. Come on!
21:52 You're here with the one and only Skinny Fabulous. How does it feel to be back here for Carnival?
21:57 It's a good feeling. As you know, it's been two and a half years. In this capacity, it's very refreshing.
22:07 It's good to see that people are coming out and actually appreciating it. We just take it for granted that it will always be here.
22:14 I think this is one of the years that people legitimately have a solid appreciation for the culture.
22:21 You have a new album out, you have music out, you have a collaboration with Lila. We're getting great feedback.
22:28 What has been your response? How are you feeling?
22:31 In terms of the season and the songs, I was pleasantly surprised at the reception of the album.
22:40 We ended up placing or securing the number one spot on iTunes for some time.
22:45 That was quite an accomplishment that we didn't actually expect. We just wanted to put our body of work and put it out there.
22:52 And then for this collab to come home, obviously we never intended it to be a contender or even recorded it in any competitive spirit.
23:04 It was just homage to Carnival. It was just like our little love letter to the culture.
23:09 It resonated with people. We're now at a stage where Carnival and this song are merging together as one kind of energy.
23:20 You probably may have a road match kind of vibe with you because you had one some years ago and now we're hearing a buzz again this year.
23:28 What is it that you're feeling?
23:30 I strike it with the family and then I almost strike it with the culture.
23:37 And then we might strike it or almost strike it. It's always an honor to be a part of the conversation.
23:45 Because sometimes it's not about winning, it's about being in the conversation.
