Lancashire police and crime commissioner Andrew Snowden with an update from Police HQ in Hutton, Preston, about improvements in 101 and 999 services.
Transcript
00:00 Hi, I'm Andrew Snowdon, Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner and I've just been
00:05 in conversations with the Chief Constable here at Police Headquarters about the work
00:09 that we are doing to improve 101 and 999 services. I get around the county as much as I can talking
00:15 to people and one of the things that continuously comes up is wait times for 101 and that's
00:19 why they don't report particularly anti-social behaviour and dangerous driving to the police.
00:24 So there's been a number of changes and improvements made to help make sure that we've got the
00:27 right resources in the control room here when they're needed to be able to take those calls
00:33 and some improvements in technology such as a call back service at peak demand time so
00:38 you don't have to sit and wait that the police will call you back to discuss those non-urgent
00:42 issues. But also a plea, the amounts of things that come through to the police on 999 and
00:48 101 that are nothing to do with the police. There's even examples of people ringing 999
00:54 because cold pizza has been delivered. That is actually some of the things that comes
00:58 through. So my plea is, trying to get the force and they are making improvements to
01:03 the way that 999 and 101 are handled but equally to the public to make sure if you have a genuine
01:10 emergency risk, serious risk to property or person, call 999 to report those low level
01:16 crimes or non-urgent crimes or crime that has already happened, ring 101 and contact
01:22 the other agencies who are responsible for things that are not directly related to policing.
