Final update on the pilot whale stranding at Cheynes Beach

'Despite the best efforts of volunteers and staff at Cheynes Beach to move the 45 whales to deeper water, at approximately 5pm on Wednesday all of the whales re-stranded just metres further along the beach.Within an hour of beaching, veterinarians had assessed the whales and confirmed they were displaying signs of rapid deterioration. Two whales died of natural causes. Our incident management team then determined the most appropriate and humane course of action was to euthanise the 43 remaining whales to avoid prolonging their suffering. '

00:09 But the one thing I did observe yesterday was the very best of humanity and the best

00:16 And I just want to acknowledge and thank everyone who responded to that incident.

00:24 We ended up with 350 people there and a special thanks to the 250 volunteers that turned up

00:31 at the incident to help rescue the whales.

00:36 Their efforts were enormous and as everyone would have seen, the conditions were trying,

00:41 the water was cold.

00:42 And just a big shout out to all those volunteers and once again, thank them for their efforts.
