The grand opposition alliance has set its plan of moving a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi govt, in motion. The Indian National Congress' Lok Sabha Deputy and North east leader Gaurav Gogoi has moved the no-confidence motion in the lower house of the parliament today. Apart from him, BRS MP Nama Nageswara Rao has also filed the No Confidence Motion against the Government. If adopted in the lower house, this would be a major political development as it would be the first time in last 20 years that a no-confidence motion would be taken up. The last time a no-confidence motion was initiated was in 2003 against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee govt. This strategy comes in response to the ongoing deadlock in the Parliament, with the first three days of the monsoon session being washed out due to the opposition lawmakers insisting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement regarding the ethnic violence in Manipur. In this video, we bring to you some historical facts about the No-Confidence motion besides explaining about the ruling regimes whose downfall was attributed to passage of a no-confidence motion.

00:15 Grand Opposition Alliance has set its plan of moving a no-confidence motion against the
00:20 Narendra Modi government in motion.
00:23 The Indian National Congress' Lok Sabha Deputy and North East Leader Gaurav Gogoi
00:28 has moved the no-confidence motion in the lower house of the parliament today.
00:32 Apart from him, BRS MP Nama Nageshwar Rao has also filed the no-confidence motion against
00:37 the government.
00:39 If adopted in the lower house, this would be a major political development as it would
00:43 be the first time in last 20 years that a no-confidence motion would be taken up.
00:49 The last time a no-confidence motion was initiated was in 2003 against the Atal Bihari Vajpayee
00:54 government.
00:55 This strategy comes in response to the ongoing deadlock in the parliament with the first
00:59 few days of the monsoon session being washed out due to the opposition lawmakers insisting
01:04 on Prime Minister's statement regarding the ethnic violence in Manipur.
01:09 In this video, we bring to you some historical facts about the no-confidence motion besides
01:14 explaining about the ruling regimes whose downfall was attributed to the passage of
01:18 a no-confidence motion.
01:21 Since independence, a total of 27 no-confidence motions have been moved in the Lok Sabha.
01:26 The first no-confidence motion was moved against Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru by Congress
01:31 leader Acharya Kriplani in August 1963 immediately after losing to China in the 1962 war.
01:38 The motion, however, was defeated.
01:40 Indira Gandhi as Prime Minister faced the most number of no-confidence motions, 15,
01:46 but she survived each of the 15 floor tests.
01:49 Former West Bengal CM Jyotirmay Basu of the CPIM had moved a total of four no-confidence
01:55 motions.
01:56 Former Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao had to face three no-confidence motions.
02:00 Murarji Desai faced two, while Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee
02:06 and Narendra Modi have all faced one each.
02:09 The first no-confidence motion against Narendra Modi government was moved by the TDP in 2018
02:16 for the non-allocation of adequate funds for the successor state of Andhra Pradesh, but
02:20 it was not taken up by the House.
02:22 The duration of the longest debate on a no-confidence motion was 24.34 hours against Lal Bahadur
02:29 Shastri who has had to prove the majority of the House thrice.
02:33 Here is a look at times when no-confidence motions resulted in the dismissal of political
02:38 regimes over the years.
02:40 1.
02:41 V.P. Singh's regime in 1990 V.P. Singh, a Janata Dal politician, held
02:46 the Prime Minister's post from 1989 to 1990.
02:50 His National Front Coalition government had relied on support from left parties and the
02:54 right-wing BJP to keep the Congress out of power.
02:58 However, the government's survival was short-lived as the BJP withdrew its support over the Ram
03:03 Temple issue, leading to the government's defeat in a no-confidence motion on November
03:08 10, 1990.
03:09 V.P. Singh promptly resigned as the Prime Minister, losing the confidence motion by
03:13 a vote of 142 to 346 in the Lok Sabha with eight abstentions.
03:19 2.
03:20 H.D.
03:21 Devgoda's government in 1997 After the 1996 general elections, the Janata
03:26 Dal leader H.D.
03:27 Devgoda became the Prime Minister when no party secured enough seats to form a government.
03:32 On 1 June 1996, he was chosen to lead the United Front Coalition government with Congress
03:38 support, becoming the 11th Prime Minister of India.
03:41 However, just 10 months later, the Congress led by Sita Ram Kesari withdrew its support,
03:47 leading to Devgoda's fall.
03:49 On April 11, 1997, a no-confidence motion was put forward and Gowda's 13-party coalition
03:55 managed to secure only 158 out of the 545 seats in the Lok Sabha.
04:01 3.
04:02 Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government The veteran BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee
04:07 faced two no-confidence motions during his tenure as Prime Minister.
04:11 The first motion resulted in his government's defeat by a single vote on April 17, 1999
04:17 after the AIA DMK led by Jai Lalita withdrew its support.
04:21 Nonetheless, Vajpayee's political journey was not over.
04:25 A few months later, he led the BJP back to power.
04:28 In 2003, when the opposition brought another no-confidence motion against his government,
04:33 it won by a decisive majority of 312 to 186 votes.
04:39 As far as today's no-confidence motion is concerned, its adoption would hardly mean
04:43 anything for the ruling regime.
04:45 The Narendra Modi government, which enjoys the support of at least 332 MPs in the Lok
04:50 Sabha, faces virtually no threat from this no-confidence motion.
