00:08 "This way."
00:09 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today, we're unearthing nine hidden secrets in Final Fantasy XVI.
00:16 Final Fantasy XVI is a love letter for fans of the franchise, and is chock full of references and callbacks
00:23 to not only previous games in the series, but also other media as well.
00:28 What secret or Easter egg filled you with nostalgia? Let us know down in the comments.

00:51 Chocobos have long been a staple of the Final Fantasy series, and in Final Fantasy XVI,
00:56 Clive's beloved Chocobo Ambrosia plays a more important role than ever before,
01:01 even if her side quest to join him is entirely missable.
01:05 However, simply having Chocobos in XVI isn't the only callback to the series' history.
01:11 While in the open world, Clive can whistle for Ambrosia to join him and explore the world from the back of the beautiful bird,
01:18 but it's specifically his whistle we want to focus on here.
01:22 For longtime fans, and we do mean long time fans,
01:26 Clive's whistle is the exact same whistle that Tidus teaches to Yuna all the way back in Final Fantasy X.
01:33 It's a wonderful callback not only to the series' history, but also its usage,
01:38 in which Tidus tells Yuna, "Just whistle, and I'll come running."
01:43 "Hey, use that if we get separated. Then, I'll come running, okay?"
01:48 Cinematic inspirations.
01:51 [Cinematic music]
02:01 Final Fantasy XVI is by far the most cinematic entry in the franchise so far,
02:06 with its absolutely bombastic and over-the-top clashes between kaiju-sized icons.
02:11 But some eagle-eyed fans may have noticed some more obvious shout-outs to other popular franchises.
02:18 In particular, we'd be hard-pressed to ignore the obvious design inspiration
02:22 for Final Fantasy XVI's interpretation of Titan,
02:25 who was already a long-standing icon of the series.
02:29 Fans of the anime Attack on Titan will see clear similarities
02:32 between Titan and the horrifying namesake monsters from the beloved anime.
02:37 The second is far more obvious for fans of Middle-Earth,
02:40 as the opening battle between the Phoenix and Ifrit is a near one-to-one recreation
02:45 of the battle between Gandalf and the Balrog in The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers.
02:50 Come to think of it, Ifrit's design looks pretty familiar too.
02:54 "Power your foots!"
02:57 "NOOOOOO!"
03:01 Fantastical weapons.
03:03 The Final Fantasy series has some of the most iconic weaponry in all of gaming,
03:08 and Final Fantasy XVI pays homage to fan favorites,
03:11 but also some specific to some of the mainline titles.
03:15 While you won't find the likes of Cloud's Buster Sword or Squall's Gunblades,
03:19 fingers crossed for DLC,
03:21 you will find the familiar Masamune,
03:23 and if you're lucky enough, or rich enough, to snag the Collector's Edition of the game,
03:28 you can unlock the Blood Sword.
03:30 And just for pre-ordering the game at all,
03:32 the Warrior of Light's sword Braveheart from the very first Final Fantasy title.
03:38 Sadly, neither of these are upgradable,
03:40 so they won't be able to stick with you for your entire journey through Valisthea.
03:44 Aiming high.
03:46 "The Enterprise is already the fastest ship in the realm,
03:48 and that's with the sea beneath her.
03:50 But what if she weren't bound to the waves?
03:52 What if she weren't bound to anything at all?"
03:55 Cid is one of the only characters to appear in nearly every entry in the Final Fantasy series,
04:01 and in most appearances, he's the pilot of one of the series' iconic airships.
04:06 However, in Final Fantasy XVI, while airships are routinely referenced,
04:11 there's none available to pilot,
04:13 but that doesn't stop Cid's daughter, Mid, from coming very close to creating her own.
04:19 Using her father's designs in a side mission called "Aiming High,"
04:23 Clive can assist Mid in her dream to take to the skies using her model airship as a prototype.
04:29 Long-time fans will instantly recognize her model as Cid's famous airship,
04:33 the Invincible from Final Fantasy III.
04:36 While Mid's dreams will never quite take flight,
04:39 anyone familiar with Cid's lineage throughout the series
04:42 knows that it's only a matter of time before she's airworthy.
04:45 "It wasn't supposed to fly, was it?"
04:49 "Of course it was supposed to fly.
04:53 Wouldn't be much of an airship if it didn't."
04:55 Tactical Cid
04:57 "Well then, with a sprinkle of fire and ice, this plan of mine might just work."
05:05 As previously mentioned, Cid is a long-standing staple of the franchise,
05:10 and while every version stands on their own,
05:13 XVI's version of Cid shares a bit more in common with a Cid fans might already be familiar with.
05:18 While the other games only refer to him as "Cid," XVI uses his full name, "Sedolphus,"
05:25 which will be instantly recognizable for anyone who has played Final Fantasy Tactics.
05:31 Within Final Fantasy Tactics, Sedolphus is not only one of the strongest characters
05:36 players can have in their party, but within the game is also referred to as the Thunder God.
05:42 In Final Fantasy XVI, Cid is the dominant of the icon Rama, who wields his mighty lightning rod,
05:49 making Cid the de facto Thunder God in the realm of Valisthea.
05:53 *Thunder God*
06:05 Iconic Dragoon
06:07 *Iconic Dragoon*
06:15 Final Fantasy XVI shares an awful lot of DNA with the fourth entry in the franchise,
06:20 with its warring kingdoms and a disgraced knight on the road to redemption,
06:24 but the similarities don't end there.
06:27 Dragoons have long been one of the many classes available to players within the franchise,
06:31 and even one of the best classes in Yoshi-P's other blockbuster Final Fantasy, A Realm Reborn.
06:37 With the Dragoons being one of the leading militant forces of the Holy Empire of Sambrek,
06:42 their Dragoon pose is instantly recognizable to even the most casual of fans.
06:48 However, in XVI, players get a much more direct callback to Four
06:53 with the knight of Blinding Dawn's entrance during the events of Phoenix Gate.
06:58 Perched on top of the castle, his pose is nearly identical to that of Final Fantasy IV's logo,
07:04 as well as the Dragoon character art for both Four and Fourteen.
07:08 *Dragoon*
07:13 A familiar Black Mage
07:15 *Black Mage*
07:22 Much like the Dragoons, mages have long been a go-to character class for magic users,
07:27 whether they were healers or on the front lines.
07:30 Final Fantasy IX took this beloved class and gave it a bit more character,
07:34 as players followed Vivi in his search for his place during the events of Final Fantasy IX.
07:39 While exploring the fields north of Martha's Rest,
07:42 fans of the Little Black Mage can find it nearly impossible to overlook Easter Egg
07:47 guarding the crops of a small town eerily reminiscent of the Black Mage village Vivi discovers in IX.
07:53 Upon closer inspection, there's no mistaking the Scarecrows are near-carbon copies of
07:59 everyone's favorite Little Black Mage from IX,
08:02 right down to his little yellow eyes and iconic hat and coat.
08:06 Final Fantasy IX Remake when?
08:08 *Final Fantasy IX Remake*
08:15 You spoony bard!
08:17 *When lightning struck, his yoke did break, his life his own again*
08:25 Yet another callback to Final Fantasy IV,
08:27 this one is by far one of the easiest to overlook if you're not familiar with its legacy.
08:33 The now famous line was spoken by Tela during a fight with who he presumes is a humble bard,
08:38 but is actually a prince in disguise,
08:41 and in his surprise proclaims "You spoony bard!"
08:44 as one is known to do in this type of situation.
08:47 The line took on a life of its own and has become one of the most memorable moments
08:51 from an already unforgettable game.
08:54 While exploring the game's hideout,
08:56 you can find a man strumming away on a lute singing tales of the land,
09:00 and given his profession, of course his name is the spoony bard.
09:05 *Be it welcome to the morning, and fears of night, goodbye*
09:18 Echoes from the past.
09:19 *Your friend needs her rest, there'll be time for tearful reunions once she's recovered*
09:26 Final Fantasy XVI has often been referenced as a celebration of the franchise by its developers,
09:32 and fans will find no shortage of not only easter eggs,
09:35 but callbacks to some of the series' most beloved entries.
09:39 From remixes to direct homages of iconic pieces of music,
09:44 seriously the music is so, so good,
09:47 to job classes like the white mage Taya as the game's healer,
09:50 and even the hideout's restaurant the Fat Chocobo,
09:53 lifelong fans will find a lot to get nostalgic about.
09:57 Even some of the character names such as Tiamat are direct shout-outs
10:01 to the series' origins from the very first Final Fantasy game.
