Zillow's new service displays various fees like application, security deposits, parking, and pet fees. Apartments.com will offer a cost calculator for upfront and recurring costs, and AffordableHousing.com requires property owners to disclose all fees and upfront charges in their listings while identifying those with good practices. The rental platforms' announcement, in coordination with the White House's Renters Bill of Rights blueprint, aims to promote fairness and transparency for renters amid the increasing number of rent-burdened households in the US. The National Consumer Law Center cautions that additional fees can exacerbate the burden on renters, resulting in rental debts and financial instability.
