Inflation is affecting household fur babies, with pet food rising 15 percent year-over-year and pet products rising 12 percent, according to the January CPI. Pet toy purchases are down 16 percent year-over-year, and sales of pet housing are down 21 percent. Pet owners are cutting back on specialty items such as raw food diets and monthly subscriptions. They are also baking their homemade treats and commuting for lower-cost vet care. Pet food shortages over the last two years led to higher costs, and pet food is outpacing that of groceries for humans.
