In 1963, William Branham told his listeners in Phoenix, Arizona that he was “called on a case”, and that he got a “little certificate” for “Saving a life”. Though Branham did not say who the certificate was from, he did give the description of the event that allegedly earned his certificate. He said that Mr. Ayers, one of the photographers who captured Branham’s “halo photograph”, thanked him for saving his son from the death penalty in the electric chair. Branham never explained how that he saved the boy, but did say that he was pardoned by the Governor of the State of Texas
Shortly before hunting in Arizona after the 1963 cloud event, Branham held meetings to petition the stay of execution for Leslie Douglas Ashley, a transsexual prostitute who killed one of his clients during a three day orgy. The newspaper and government records explain how William Branham saved Ashley from death: an insanity plea. Apparently, Branham convinced Ashley to claim that he was “Elijah the prophet”, and Ashley did so. The governor was convinced, and Ashley was sent to a minimum security facility, where he later escaped and entered the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list.
In 1965, Branham claimed that for saving Ashley’s life, he won an oscar — an award given in the film industry — from the humane society — an organization established to prevent cruelty to animals. After his “special case” in Houston at the end of February and/or the first week of March, Branham said that he then went back to Arizona to hunt. He would later say that this hunting trip was during the cloud event on February 28, 1963, and enough people believed him that he actually … should … have won an oscar.
