Social media giant Twitter ($TWTR@US) has announced that it will launch a version of its site as a Tor onion service to optimize privacy and help users avoid censorship. Software engineer Alec Muffett released the news on Tuesday and described it as “possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.” The new version of the site adds more protections when you access Twitter using the Tor browser, joining news outlets like the BBC and the New York Times. At press time, Twitter was up close to a percent at more than $32 per share.
