Dapeng Fortress, about 55km east of the city centre; is a small but well preserved ancient town which was built in the 1394, to protect the area from pirates. It later developed into a town during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1571, it sustained a siege of over forty days by Japanese pirates equipped with scaling ladders. The fortress was the site of one of the key battles in the country’s infamous opium wars.
