International Day of the Girl aims to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

In Islam, girls are seen as a mercy from Allah. Sadly in some parts of the world people did not value baby girls as much as boys, and some even bury girls alive! But the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, put a stop to this horrendous practice. And he taught that everyone should treat their girls fairly, the same as boys.

Over time, some people have changed the way they treat girls, but there is still more to be done on educating people and dealing with the challenges that many girls face, to promote empowerment of girls, and to fulfil our human rights.

True Islamic teachings maintains the dignity of girls. A girl is encouraged to be educated, to have the right to the same food and clothes as family members, to be spoken to in a respectful way, to be protected from others staring at them, to be listened to when she speaks, and to be judged on what she says rather than her looks.
