Chinese Sanskrit scholar XuFancheng -
Prof Xu came to Pondicherry in 1951, he lived in Pondicherry for 27 years (1951 -78) and specialized in the works of Sri Aurobindo and Mother Mirra Alfassa. He translated many of the books related to Sri Aurobindo which included The Life divine(1984), On Yoga(1988), Integral Yoga (2005), Yoga Letter set (2005). The translations of Sri Aurobindo’s thoughts on spiritual and social evolution theories were widely received by Chinese intellectuals.
Prof Xu was also a Chinese painter and calligrapher, more than 500 Chinese paintings, can be found at Pondicherry Aurobindo ashram studio and also many of his paintings are with the peoples of Pondicherry who had acquaintances with him. Prof Xu left Pondicherry in 1978. In 2006 – the year of the India-China friendship, Prof. Xu’s works were published by the Chinese academy of social science in a total of 16 volumes. Today in the field of India-China relations he is regarded as the greatest cultural bridge between India and China and also called often by scholars, the modern-day Xuan Zang.
