NMB mayor speaks on PE name change

Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Nqaba Bhanga has called for the reversal of the new name given to Port Elizabeth. Bhanga recently wrote to Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa over the renaming of Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha. Bhanga says he is not against the name change, but against the processes that were followed to reach this decision. He also says Gqeberha has no meaning in isiXhosa. He claims the origins of the name lie in the Khoi language. And writing it in isiXhosa is an insult to the Khoi. Bhanga was giving clarity regarding the recently announced name changes to Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage. Courtesy #DStv403
