Popcorn Is Piling Up Thanks to Movie Theater Closures

The pandemic has upended 2020, and most of the news has been bad, but some industries have seen silver-linings.For popcorn, producers are seeing both sides of the coin.Being stuck at home has caused a surge in microwave popcorn sales, but closed movie theaters have been a blow. That's because 30% of America's popcorn consumption takes place outside of the home. And those kernels are typically supplied by growers that have eschewed microwave packaging.Since the shutdown, Preferred Popcorn, said they have had to install seven new silos to hold all their unsold kernels.Unfortunately, popcorn only lasts about a year before it's too dry to do its whole popping thing. But the brand is now packaging their surplus for retail sales, so be on the lookout for this popcorn at the store
