Meet Gullalaii Yousafzai, First Scottish Pakistani female to present a Pashto language radio show Balana from Scotland. The focus of her radio show is social and health awareness. Her mother recognised her ‘gift of the gab’ and encouraged her to become a radio presenter.
Gullalaii ‘s passion for learning is evident from her academic pursuits, she has a master’s degree from University of Kent in Reproductive Medicine Science and Ethics, MSc in Risk Management from Glasgow Caledonian University, a degree in Zoology and Parasitology and is currently pursuing an MSc in Nursing Studies.
Gullalaii devotes a huge chunk of her time to volunteering. She feels many people in the South Asian community unfortunately don’t understand the value of volunteer work and can’t believe that people can devote so much time without getting paid.
Gullalaii volunteers in the Renal Dialysis Unit at the New Victoria Hospital, Glasgow. She provides companionship and support to patients with a view to easing the anxiety and boredom that some experience whilst receiving their treatment. Last year she won NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Gold Volunteer award as a recognition for her volunteer work.
Gullalaii loves to cook, her favourites are Saag, Makkai ke roti, chappli kebabs and Karahi. She is a big fan of ‘shen chai’ (green tea) as well.
