Transcript
00:00This is the range country, where the pounding hooves of untamed horses still thunder over
00:08mountains, meadows and canyons.
00:11Every herd has its own leader, but there is only one fury, fury, king of the wild stallions.
00:18And here in the wild west of today, hard riding men still battle the open range for a living.
00:23Men like Jim Newton, owner of the Broken Wheel Ranch, and Pete, his top hand who says he
00:28cut his teeth on a branding iron.
00:30Fury!
00:31Fury!
00:32Why all this fury is, that's the one human voice he's learned to love and obey.
00:45The voice of the boy who once saved his life, Jim Newton's boy, Joey.
00:59Fury!
01:06Here's a mutual trust and affection that everyone can understand, especially a woman like Helen
01:12Watkins, Joey's school teacher and unfailing champion.
01:25And there they are together, a great wild horse and the only person on earth who can
01:30ride him, Joey and Fury.
01:37There they are Fury, let's you and I take a shortcut and feed them back to the ranch.
01:57Where do you think you're gonna take Joey?
02:00Hi Pete.
02:01Well, where are you off to?
02:03The house, I'll be right there when they arrive.
02:06Don't you think Fury'd like his bridle taken off?
02:08Sure, I'll take it off right after I meet Val Benton.
02:11Just think the world's champion cowboy right here at the Broken Wheel.
02:16You've been giving me that news ten times a day for a week now.
02:20Well Val is the best there is, and even if he is no wheelchair, bet I can learn lots
02:25of rodeo tricks from him.
02:26But just remember, a champion cowboy always takes care of his horse first.
02:31Then his horse will be in shape to help him be champion.
02:34I always take care of Fury, don't I Fury?
02:41Pete!
02:44Thanks Jim.
02:48Val!
02:49Hiya Pete.
02:50Long time no see.
02:51I reckon it's been more than a year.
02:53Here, let me help you in the house.
02:54Thanks Pete.
02:55Val's got some baggage in there, would you pick it up please?
02:58I see you got me all the comforts of home.
03:01I thought you'd want to go up and down the stairs by yourself.
03:03You're right.
03:12Just point me Jim.
03:13This is the one Maverick I can ride.
03:19I thought Joey'd be in long for this.
03:21I told him a champion cowboy always takes care of his horse.
03:24So he's out rubbing down Fury so he'll look real pretty when Val sees him.
03:30Say Pete.
03:31Yeah?
03:32Remember what I told you and Joey about Val's visit?
03:34Well, you told us a heap of things.
03:36Now look, just remember this.
03:38We've got our work to do here on the ranch, and we're going to go on doing it the same as ever.
03:42I reckon we'll have to give a little extra attention to Val.
03:45We're going to treat Val like any other guest here.
03:47No special privileges, even if he is in a wheelchair.
03:49Understand?
03:52Hi.
03:53Where's Al Benton?
03:54Come on in.
03:55I'll introduce you to him.
03:56Okay.
04:02Val, this is my boy Joey.
04:04Howdy.
04:05Gosh, Mr. Benton.
04:06I'm sure pleased to meet you.
04:08Guess you're kind of surprised to see me riding this, huh?
04:11No, Jim told me he had an accident.
04:13Guess you'll be back riding Broncos any time now.
04:17I heard you've got a pretty woolly Bronc yourself.
04:19Oh, Fury's no Bronco.
04:21Wait till you see him.
04:22He's a champion like you.
04:24I'd sure like to meet him.
04:25I'll go and get him.
04:26Hey, wait a minute, young man.
04:27Val can say hello to Fury later on.
04:29Right now, you've got to go get cleaned up for dinner.
04:31I won't be long.
04:32We're having steak and mushrooms.
04:34And blueberry pie.
04:39You're a fine boy, Jim.
04:40Oh, thanks.
04:41Here, look at this.
04:43He's your number one fan, Val.
04:45Ever since I told him that you and I used to go rodeoing together,
04:48he's been collecting stories and pictures and everything about you.
04:52I guess there won't be any more pictures to collect.
04:56Well, the book's almost full anyway.
05:01You're one cowpoke I could count on not to go soft on me, Jim.
05:04That's one of the reasons why I accepted your invitation.
05:08I didn't expect the same service here you got at that fancy hospital.
05:11They can keep that place.
05:13I spent a couple of months there and I'd have gone crazy.
05:16The way they kept after me with those bars and things,
05:18trying to get me to walk again.
05:20I heard they got you out of this chair a few times.
05:23Yeah, once.
05:25I got up with the help of those parallel bars,
05:28took one step and went flat on my face.
05:32They picked me up and said I was doing fine.
05:35With a chair, maybe two, I could walk a little.
05:39A couple of canes.
05:43This wheelchair gets me around fine.
05:45I don't need any of that other stuff.
05:47Well, you won't get any of that other stuff here.
05:49You'll be on your own mostly.
05:51Pete and I have our work to do.
05:52Joey will be in school most of the day.
05:54That suits me fine.
05:56I never had a minute's peace in the hospital.
05:58People from the rodeo, friends, strangers wanting autographs,
06:02their get-well-quick grins and their cheery pep talks.
06:06I was fed up to hear with it.
06:08That's what you get for being a world champion cowboy.
06:13I guess I shouldn't kick, Jim.
06:16I made a lot of money and I saved most of it.
06:19Anyway, this ranch will be a nice place to think about it.
06:24Yeah, well, I guess you're right, Val.
06:27Yeah, that rodeo circuit's old stuff.
06:30Glad I got out of it when I did.
06:33The glaring spotlights and the screaming of the crowds.
06:38The feel of the bronc under you when you're coming out of that chute.
06:41No, that's no kind of life for a man.
06:47Well, I guess I'll go see how Pete's doing with dinner.
07:01Come on, Neil.
07:03What's all this about?
07:05Joey's got an idea that the broken wheel is being turned into a rodeo training ground.
07:12God, Fury, now up!
07:15That kid. You know, he had Val talking for a whole hour about the Calgary Stampede.
07:20You know, Jim, I can't figure Val out.
07:23He seems mighty contented in that wheelchair of his.
07:26I don't think so, Pete.
07:28I think he hangs onto that chair like a shield.
07:31What do you mean?
07:33Well, the doctor said that if Val really tried, someday he could walk.
07:37Why in tarnation does he sit in that wheelchair?
07:40Well, there's a kind of a fear that gnaws away at a man, Pete, holds him back.
07:46I think that's happening to Val.
07:48The doctor sort of figures that Val hangs onto that chair to prove that nothing can be done for him.
07:54Maybe somebody ought to set off a stick of dynamite under him.
07:58You know what I think?
08:00I think it's Val that has to do the blasting.
08:03That's a good boy.
08:05Now you watch me.
08:15Well, I guess I need a little practice, too.
08:18Hi, Joey.
08:20Hi, Val.
08:22I'm going to show Val a new trick.
08:26Hi, Val. Did you see Fury kneeling?
08:28Yeah, that was real fancy.
08:30Did it take you long to teach him?
08:32No, Fury learns fast.
08:34We're practicing for the next junior rodeo.
08:36Watch.
08:39I guess you're never going to win any roping contest that way.
08:42Here, let me show you.
08:44Thanks, Val.
08:47Now you've got to watch me closely because it's all in your wrist.
08:52Watch.
08:58Gosh.
09:06Well.
09:09That's pretty good, Val.
09:13Pete, maybe Joey's rope is the fuse that will set off that dynamite under Val's wheelchair.
09:22I thought you said he didn't like anybody but you.
09:24He doesn't get that friendly with everybody.
09:26He likes you, don't you, Fury?
09:30Understand everything you say, huh?
09:32Sure. That's why it's so easy for me to teach him things.
09:35You ought to see the trophy he helped me win in the last junior rodeo.
09:38I bet you didn't have much competition.
09:40Sure did. It was a miracle we didn't lose.
09:43Oh, I don't believe it was a miracle, Joey.
09:45You and Fury were just the best entry.
09:48Well, sometimes you can be the best, but something happens.
09:51And it looks like you haven't got a chance.
09:53But if you keep on having faith, a miracle can happen, and you'll win.
09:57You really believe that, Joey?
09:59Uh-huh.
10:01Did you ever tell Jim about this miracle?
10:03No, he never asked me.
10:06But Fury knows about it.
10:08I wish I were your size again.
10:10Why?
10:12So I could believe in miracles.
10:14Size has nothing to do with it.
10:16Miracles can happen to all kinds of people.
10:18If you want something good to happen, all you've got to do is believe hard enough.
10:22You know, Joey, not so long ago, I believed so very hard that I'd walk again.
10:30But nothing happened.
10:32No miracle.
10:34Just a wheelchair.
10:36Well, I wish for an awful lot of things and never got them.
10:39But that didn't stop me from keeping on wishing and believing.
10:42And then when things really count, and I really believe in them, they come true.
10:46And one day you're going to walk. I know.
10:49I'd give anything in the world if I could only believe like you do, Joey.
11:05Hey, you've got some pretty good ones here.
11:07Uh-huh. Where's Val?
11:09I think he's out on the porch.
11:10Can I see him for a minute?
11:12Well, just for a minute, then. Bed.
11:21Hi, Val.
11:22Like to see my scrapbook?
11:24Sure, Joey.
11:30It seems to me you could have found something more interesting to collect than pictures of me.
11:34Lots of kids collect pictures of you, but I got the best collection.
11:39Could you sign your autograph in it?
11:41Well, I haven't got a pen.
11:44Here, use mine.
11:49Not in the back. Could you sign it in the front, please?
11:53You've got a lot of empty pages.
11:55Could have saved yourself some money and got a smaller book.
11:58I'll fill them up when you start back in the rodeo.
12:05Gee, that's swell. What if I show that to the kids at school?
12:09Say, maybe you could ride down tomorrow and meet some of them.
12:12Joey, you know I couldn't do that.
12:14I guess not if you don't want to.
12:18Well, good night, Val.
12:20Good night, Joey.
12:27Must have taken him a long time to collect all those pictures.
12:30He gets a kick out of it, Val.
12:32I guess there won't be any more to fill out the rest of the book.
12:35Why not?
12:37Life and career of Val Benton, champion cowboy, stops
12:41at where Joey pasted the last picture, right in the middle of the book.
12:45I guess it's up to you whether the rest of that book is a series of blank pages.
13:11Tonight I got something a little special to ask for you.
13:14Besides blessing everybody, it's Val Benton.
13:18You know, the one you made a champion cowboy.
13:22Well, he doesn't think he can walk.
13:24And he doesn't even try.
13:27But if he did, he'd be able to.
13:31Maybe you could help him stand up.
13:33And if he tried hard enough, he'd walk.
13:37That's what I heard Jim say.
13:39And he ought to know.
13:43Amen.

15:39Pete.
15:42What's the problem? Battery?
15:43I wish I knew.
15:45Well, let me know when you find out. We have to go to town this afternoon.
15:50Pete and I are going into town. Can we bring you anything?
16:04Val, what's eating you?
16:06You haven't said a word since you got up this morning.
16:08Come on, what is it?
16:10I'm a little tired of being a burden around here.
16:12I can't do anything. I don't even pay my way.
16:15Well, if it makes you feel any better, I'll charge your board and room.
16:18You can afford it and I can use the money.
16:21You'd better figure out my bill for the time I've stayed.
16:23Your bill is paid. That lesson you gave Joe, he'll pay it.
16:27Jim.
16:29Last night, I tried to get out of this chair.
16:32I fell flat on my face again.
16:37Look, what do you want me to do?
16:39Give you a shoulder to cry on?
16:41Jim, believe me, I don't feel sorry for myself.
16:45I just can't face Joey.
16:47Joey?
16:49What, are you trying to tell me that Joey made you get out of the chair?
16:52In a way, he did. I was out on the porch last night.
16:55I heard him praying.
16:57There's nothing unusual about that. He says his prayers every night.
17:00I know, but last night, he prayed for me.
17:03Prayed that I'd at least try to walk.
17:05Well, you did try.
17:08I let him down.
17:10I don't think so.
17:13It looks like Pete's got the car fixed. You sure there's nothing we can bring you?
17:16No, thanks.
17:22Well, at least you tried.
17:34Look!
17:40Look, Fury!
17:43Let's go see where they're landing.
18:04I'm stuck here! Quick, Sam! Get help!
18:08I'm sinking!
18:10Fury!
18:12Fury! I'm stuck!
18:17I can't get out!
18:20Hurry, Fury!
18:22Quick, Sam!
18:24Fury! Fury, I'm stuck! Go get help!
18:33I'm stuck!
19:04What is it, Fury? What's the matter?
19:07Joey?
19:09Who? Joey?
19:19What's happened, Fury? Where's Joey?
19:24There's mud on you, and it hasn't been raining.
19:26It's Joey, isn't it, Fury? He's in trouble.
19:29It's Joey, isn't it, Fury? He's in trouble.
19:40Steady, boy. Stay there now.
19:56Steady, boy. Steady.
19:59Steady.
20:30Steady, boy.
20:41All right, Fury, let's go.
20:59Over here, Ralph!
21:01Fury!
21:10Ralph! I'm over here!
21:13Take it easy, Joey. We'll get you out.
21:15Don't bring Fury closer to this quicksand here.
21:19You've got more sense than I have.
21:21Another step and we'd be trapped, too.
21:23Ralph! Hurry! I'm still sinking!
21:26Don't lose your head, Joey.
21:28Oh, boy.
21:45It's too short, Val. You'll have to come in closer.
21:52Hurry, Val! Val!
21:54What? I'm sinking!
21:57Hurry, Val! I'm sinking! Hurry!
22:02Hurry, Val! Please!
22:15Val! Val!
22:27Joey, put your hands up over your head.
22:47Joey, when I pull, push with your hands.
22:56Joey, when I pull, push with your hands.
23:15Fury!
23:19Val! You walked, Val! You walked!
23:23And I'm standing, Joey. I'm standing.
23:26As if there was nothing ever wrong with my legs.
23:29It's like a miracle.
23:31It is a miracle, Joey. It's a miracle, just like you read about.
23:36Come on, let's go back to the ranch and make a junk pile out of that wheelchair.
23:40How's that, Val?
23:42That's pretty good. But that's not quite it.
23:45Jump down a minute, and I'll show you.
23:56That horse of yours.
24:00I'll show you.
24:02I'll show you.
24:04I'll show you.
24:06I'll show you.
24:08That horse of yours.
24:11Fury let me ride him once, but he had a special reason.
24:14That's right, Val. Joey's still Fury's favorite cowboy.
24:18Well, one miracle's plenty to happen to a man.
24:20I guess I would take another one before Fury would let me ride him again.
24:38THE END
