India has been hit by a number of cyclones since ages. However, 10 cyclones till now, have proved to be the most dangerous, causing devastating destruction across the affected region. These are:

Amphan-2020, Fani - 2019, Ockhi - 2017, Vardah - 2016, Hudhud – 2014, Phailin – 2013, Helen – 2013, Nilam – 2012, Phyan – 2009, Odisha Cyclone – 1999

Cyclones usually occur in the months of May-June and October-November, with a primary peak in November and a secondary peak in Spring. While cyclones impact the entire coast of India, the East Coast is more vulnerable than the West Coast.

Here we are trying to compare two tropical cyclones namely Amphan 2020 and Fani 2019, using GSMap satellite precipitate and Google Earth Engine script.

Fani was described as an extremely severe cyclonic storm that hit the state of Odisha in India this month. It left behind a trail of destruction killing more than 40 people, cutting down trees and the communication system, crippling the economy of the state and normal life.

Fani quickly intensified into an extremely intense cyclonic storm and hit its height on May 2 as a high-end, highly severe cyclonic storm. It was a high-end category 4 major hurricane.

Amphan is the first super cyclone since 1999 cyclone which devastated Odisha and killed more than 9,000 people. However, according to IMD chief Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Amphan is expected to reduce in intensity and will be an 'extremely severe cyclonic storm'.
