00:00Pioneer men and women struggled with the elemental passions that rose within themselves, for
00:18the stresses and strains of frontier life wore thin the nerves as well as the bodies.
00:23But whether the sickness was of the body or the soul, there was one man to whom all turned
00:27in time of trouble. Rex Allen stars as the Frontier Doctor.
00:54I didn't worry much about it at the time, young Ben Adams chasing Kathy Lambert. After
00:59all, young men always have and always will chase girls, especially at round-up time in
01:05the spring. About the only time I ever saw Kathy Lambert was maybe once or twice a year.
01:12I didn't know Kathy's mother very well either, but I sure had heard a lot about her. She
01:17was a widow woman, and Kathy was her only child. She did everything possible to keep
01:21Kathy away from men, especially cowboys.
01:24No, Ben, please, go away. Mother sees you.
01:28No, mother sees me if mother finds out. Look, I'm tired of hearing about mother.
01:32But, Ben, you don't know.
01:33All I know is you're my gal, and I want the whole world to know it. Now, come on.
01:36Please, Ben, for your own good. Ben, please, let me see you.
01:40Oh, mother. Oh, Ben.
01:49Kathy, come here. Stay away from him.
01:52Ben, look what you've done.
01:56Kathy.
01:57Look what you've done. The blood. Let me go.
01:59Why, no.
02:00Before you die, let me kill you.
02:01Now, shut up. Now, listen. Shut up. Are you there in the house? If I don't want her to
02:06kill him, I'd have done it. Now, you get.
02:15What did you have to go and do this for?
02:17To keep you from making the same mistake twice, cowboy.
02:22Oh, stop complaining. You've got years left to cut me out.
02:32This wasn't the first time Liz Lambert threatened young men with a gun.
02:36But it was the first time she'd ever actually shot anyone.
02:39The Lambert foreman, old Al Bixby, came in to fetch me.
02:43And inasmuch as I'm obliged to report all gunshot cases to the law,
02:47Sheriff Bramble rode out with me to ask me embarrassing questions.
02:57I'll talk to Mrs. Lambert.
02:59As soon as you know about the boy's condition, let me know.
03:02Liz wouldn't tolerate the thought of him under her own roof.
03:05He's in my room behind the barn.
03:14Hello, Liz.
03:16Figure on trying to put me in jail, Bramble?
03:18Depends on whether the boy lives.
03:20He'll live.
03:22You can't go shooting your own cowhands just because they come calling on your daughter.
03:27Look, that's my business. It's no business of yours, Sheriff.
03:30Maybe. But I gotta ask you a couple questions for my report.
03:34Well, come on in.
03:36When I don't guarantee to answer anything, I don't have a mind to.
03:44Help him off of that shirt.
04:05Well, you're a lucky boy.
04:07Missed the bone. Just went through the flesh.
04:11We'll have to clean it out, though. I want to make sure there's not a piece of shirt in there.
04:15Can you help me, Mr. Bixby?
04:17Doing what?
04:18Just hold him, that's all.
04:20I'm kind of squeamish about these things.
04:22Nobody has to hold me. I'll stay put.
04:24It's not what you want to do, son.
04:26Pain's no respecter of courage.
04:28Could I help, sir?
04:30I'm afraid this is all my fault, and I'd like to do what I could to help.
04:36You'd better get back to house, young'un. If Liz finds you...
04:39She won't need to know if you don't tell, Mr. Bixby.
04:41Come on in, miss.
04:44A man can always be a lot braver with a pretty girl around.
04:50If Liz finds you here, we're all done for sure.
04:53Then stop talking about Liz and take care of this boy.
04:56What'll I do, doctor?
04:58Just sit down there and hold him.
05:00Get your feet up on the bed.
05:09This might hurt a little bit. Brace yourself.
05:40All over, doc?
05:42Yeah, just as soon as I finish this bandage.
05:50Is everything all right, doc?
05:52Everything's fine.
05:57I told you to stay in the house, Kathy!
05:59I was needed, mother. I wanted to see you.
06:01I told you to stay in the house, Kathy!
06:03I was needed, mother. I wanted to see you.
06:05I told you to stay in the house, Kathy!
06:07I was needed, mother. I wanted to be of some use.
06:10You go to your room.
06:12Now, look here. I don't want to make any fuss.
06:14I don't care if you do or not!
06:18Get me the buggy whip, Mr. Bixby.
06:20But, ma'am, I...
06:21Go on, get it.
06:22Yes, ma'am.
06:25I don't think the whip will be necessary, Mrs. Lambert.
06:28Kathy's a grown girl. She's a woman.
06:30That's none of your business.
06:32It seems to me that when a person goes to shooting at another person...
06:34and threatening their life, it becomes the business of everyone in the community.
06:37Isn't that so, Sheriff?
06:39Well, Doc, the lad was trespassing where he'd been warned to keep away.
06:43Legally, it looks like she's got a right to take a pot shot...
06:46when most anybody comes snooping around.
06:48Now, is that plain enough, Doctor?
06:50And I want all of you to clear out of here!
06:54And that goes for you, cowboy.
06:56You don't scare me with that whip.
06:58Maybe she's scared to death, but I'm not.
07:01Oh, he's wounded.
07:03I want him off my property and off he gets!
07:06I never get to stay where I was welcome.
07:10Let's go, Doc.
07:34I suppose you think you hate me now, is that it?
07:38What I'm doing is for your own good.
07:41Is it?
07:43Well, let yourself be pawed and fondled...
07:46by one of your own paid cowards.
07:49Yes, yours as well as mine for one of these days, you'll own all this.
07:53All he wants from you is your money.
07:55That's not true.
07:57He never even mentioned me.
07:59I tell you, men are no good.
08:01All they'll ever do for you is hurt you and cause you misery.
08:05You know what it was like when Father was alive?
08:08Been drinking, beaten.
08:10Does it have to be like that with everybody?
08:13Are you going to keep arguing with me after all I've done for you?
08:17You want to run away and leave me for some worthless saddle tramp?
08:21It's not his job.
08:23It's my job.
08:25Why leave me for some worthless saddle tramp?
08:28I'll teach you, you little ungrateful...
08:31I'll tell you one thing.
08:33As long as I'm alive, you're going to stay single.
08:36Now go on in this room and think it over.
08:38Do you hear?
08:55A week later, when Ben Adams was well on the mend,
08:58I took him around to Cleve Harper to try to get him a job.
09:02Besides running this livery stable,
09:04Mr. Harper's probably one of the biggest cattle brokers in this part of the country.
09:07Well, the orneriest anyway.
09:09Ben's looking for a job.
09:11He's a first-rate cowhand and a good wrangler.
09:13Even with his arm in a sling?
09:15Doc says that'll be as good as ever in a couple of days.
09:18You're the lad Liz Lambert winged, aren't you?
09:21I can explain that, sir.
09:23Don't bother, son.
09:25Liz and I locked horns 20 years ago.
09:28I know what you were up against.
09:30You know why she runs her cattle clear over to Tonto instead of here?
09:33She gets a better price, I guess.
09:35Nope. So she won't have to deal with me.
09:38Hates the very sight of me.
09:41Hates me so much, she won't even set foot in this town.
09:44That must be quite a story, Cleve.
09:47It's a sad one, Doc.
09:50If it's ever told, it'll have to come from her.
09:54Well, I guess I could use another hand around this table.
09:57Twenty a month and keep. Take it or leave it.
09:59I'll take it.
10:00Fine. Report to Sam. Tell him you're working for me.
10:03Yes, sir.
10:04Come over and see me Tuesday.
10:06Sure thing, Doc. Thanks.
10:08Thanks, Cleve.
10:09Sure, Doc.
10:20By this time, everybody thought we'd heard the last of the Ben Adams shooting incident.
10:25And we probably would have if it hadn't been for Kathy Lambert.
10:30Well, hello there.
10:32Could I talk to you, Doctor?
10:34Sure. Come on in the house where it's cooler.
10:44This is quite a surprise.
10:46I don't believe I've ever seen you in town before.
10:48That's because I've never been. My mother forbids it.
10:51Come on in.
11:00Found a way?
11:03I guess I'm not surprised. I think I was even expecting it.
11:07I'd have done it before, but I was too scared.
11:10And I'm still scared.
11:12Suppose your mother comes after you.
11:14I'm over 20. I won't go back.
11:17Why'd you pick on me?
11:19Well, doctors understand people, and I need advice.
11:23Oh, boy.
11:25Sit down.
11:30By 20, most girls are giving advice, not taking it.
11:33I'm sorry, but you have to make up your own mind.
11:37Everyone has a right to live their own lives within certain limits.
11:41But there's the sticker. The limits.
11:45Everyone's are different.
11:47That doesn't help much.
11:50I hoped you'd say that I was perfectly right in running away.
11:55Look.
11:57Why don't you just stay here in town for a few days and think things over?
12:01In the meantime, maybe your mom will be thinking things over on her own,
12:04and she might change her mind about a good many things.
12:07Never. And I'll never go back.
12:11Too stubborn women, huh?
12:14All right. What are your plans?
12:17Well, I'll need money. I'll have to find work.
12:20Could you use a hired girl?
12:23I already have one.
12:25Dora Hendricks.
12:30Now, look. I'll tell you what we'll do.
12:33I'll take you over to Dora's house, and you'll like her.
12:36You can stay there for a few days until we find another place for you.
12:40Come on.
12:43Doctor.
12:45It's the young man. The one who was shot.
12:48Ben Adams?
12:50Yes. How is he?
12:53Good as new.
12:55He's here in town, isn't he?
12:57Yes.
12:58Does he intend to stay here?
13:01Suppose I just tell Ben to call on you tonight and answer those questions himself.
13:07Oh, Doctor.
13:09Come on.
13:13Come on.
13:26Those of us who knew Liz Lambert figured she wouldn't give up her daughter without a battle.
13:31Those who saw Al Bixby and the Lambert cowboys riding into town were sure of it.
13:37Hi, Al. Boys.
13:39Howdy, Ben.
13:41Heard you was working for Harper.
13:43Yeah, that's right. You looking for him? He's not here now.
13:45No. Liz wants back her stray.
13:48Well, don't ask me.
13:50Heard something else, too. Heard you was seeing the gal pretty regular.
13:54Listen, Al. You leave me out of this. I don't know anything about her.
13:57Ain't you learned your lesson yet, boy?
14:00Now, where you keeping the gal?
14:02I'm not keeping her anyplace.
14:04Look, she came in on her own, and that's the way it is with her.
14:06Where is she?
14:08You find her yourself.
14:11Well, I guess you'll have to work on that sore arm, boys.
14:14That ought to make him talk. I'll be back.
14:28I just can't stand to see anything separate.
14:41Let him go.
14:49Can't fool around any longer. Speak, boy, quick.
14:52Can't stand to see anything separate, but sudden death don't bother me.
14:56Now, don't make me throw down on you, boy.
14:59Just tell us where the girl is so we can take her home to her mama.
15:02Well, you listen, Bixby. You listen careful.
15:06You go tell Liz Lambert.
15:08You tell Liz Lambert.
15:10You tell her Kathy's not coming back anymore.
15:14You tell her Kathy and me's gonna be married.
15:17Married? Did you say married?
15:20That's right.
15:23You're outside the law with that gun, Bixby. None of us are armed.
15:26I ain't gonna cause any more trouble, Doc.
15:29Why don't you tell me in the first place he's gonna marry the gal?
15:32Changes the whole picture.
15:34Leastwise, it changes it for me.
15:36I ain't gonna be making any promises for Liz.
15:39Come on, boys, let's ride home.
15:44Where'd he get you, boy?
15:46Well, just in the arm and the stomach. It's all right, Doc.
15:50Say, when'd you decide to get married?
15:54Well...
15:56Last evening.
15:58Kind of a whirlwind courtship, wasn't it?
16:01Kathy know about it yet?
16:03Oh, for gosh sakes, quit writing me, will you?
16:05I had to think of something to stop old Bixby.
16:07Well, that was certainly using your head, son.
16:09But what's the young lady gonna say when she hears she's engaged?
16:14Gosh, I haven't thought of that.
16:16What are you gonna do if she says yes?
16:20Yeah.
16:31Later, we heard from some of the neighbors that Liz Lambert
16:34sort of went out of her mind when she heard about the marriage.
16:37Liz Lambert swore vengeance on me and others
16:40who had helped along the romance of Ben and Kathy.
16:43She offered every cowhand an extra month's pay
16:46and a bottle of whiskey if they'd ride into Rising Springs with her
16:49and tear the town apart.
16:51There was no question Liz had lost her senses,
16:54but her money and whiskey talked.
16:58Liz Lambert and her outfit hit town like a whirlwind
17:01one night when we were least expecting it.
17:11Here goes the first one.
17:18All right, where's Harper?
17:21Never mind, get out of here.
17:25Liz!
17:27Go on, get the horses out of here.
17:32Harper's got everything owns in this barn.
17:36It was him that gave that cowhand a job
17:39and kept him hanging around here,
17:42him and that meddling doctor.
17:46Al, you go back and get the cattle and run them through the town.
17:49That'll keep that lousy volunteer fire department
17:52from putting this out before it burns the ground.
17:55Keep going, Al. I got one more on my list.
18:15Come on, Al.
18:45The Lambert cowboys gave the fire a good chance
18:48to burn the barn to the ground
18:51by running a herd of cattle down the main street.
18:54The volunteer fire department couldn't get into action.
19:02Cleve Harper was the only one left.
19:05He was the only one left.
19:09Cleve Harper had dropped by
19:12for a friendly game of cards.
19:15This was our usual once-a-week get-together.
19:18I'm about as lucky as a sick puff.
19:39Well, somebody seems to be in a hurry.
19:42They generally are.
19:45I never got figured out why that old stork flies faster at night
19:48than he does in the daytime.
19:51Get back where you were, Doc.
19:54Ha! Both of you.
19:57I want my daughter and Ben Adams.
20:00He's working for you, Cleve Harper, so take me to him.
20:03Now, look here, Liz.
20:06None of your smooth talk.
20:09I'll shoot you, so help me.
20:12And you, too, for turning Kathy's head.
20:15Doc, look.
20:18See the fire, Cleve? That's your stable going up.
20:21Just half of what's going to happen to you if you don't take me to Kathy.
20:24Liz, you must be out of your mind.
20:27Put that gun away.
20:30Doc's right, Liz. Give me the gun.
20:33I'm sorry for her, Cleve. Don't worry, Doc.
20:36She wouldn't shoot me.
20:39Stand back, Cleve. Stand back.
20:42I warned you.
20:45Cleve! Oh, no.
20:48No, I didn't mean to shoot you.
20:51Cleve, I warned you.
20:54Help me get his coat off.
20:57Oh, I warned you.
21:00It's all right, Doc. It's only a powder burn.
21:03I think I better put something on it anyway.
21:06Oh, no, Cleve.
21:18Liz, hand me my coat, will you?
21:26I'll show you something. How can you forgive me, Cleve?
21:29Oh, I forgave you years ago, Liz.
21:35Turn around.
21:40You know what this is? A ring.
21:44Yours. An engagement ring.
21:47I bought it that time we had the argument.
21:50Before I had a chance to give it to you,
21:53Joe Lambert rode into town.
21:56He was rich and handsome and reckless,
21:59swept you off your feet.
22:02You didn't ever really love him, did you, Liz?
22:05Why didn't you at least see me?
22:08Why'd you have to run off and get married just out of spite
22:11and throughout all these years blame me?
22:17I still love you, Liz.
22:20You need me, and I need you.
22:23Come, Cleve.
22:39Hold your fire, Doc. This is a peace party.
22:42Liz's horse, she inside?
22:45Yes, she's in there.
22:48Liz, listen to me, Liz. Me and the boys are quitting.
22:51It's no decent kind of fight for us men. We just don't have no heart for it.
22:54I don't think she's got the heart for it either, Al.
22:57Why don't you boys go on back and fight that fire?
23:00Whatever you say, Doc.
23:03I reckon Liz will have expense enough paying for tonight's spree.
23:06You heard what the Doc said. Come on.
23:09Doc!
23:20Doc! Doc!
23:32I followed Mother here.
23:35I've been waiting, but I don't suppose...
23:38She needs to know that you love and forgive her.
23:41I'm sure she won't ask anything more.
23:44Will you come with me, Doc?
23:49Doc! Hey, Doc!
24:00Well?
24:03Oh, Doc, several folks are hurt. They're asking for you.
24:06Come on.
24:16Kathy.
24:19Did you matter about something? Now, what is it?
24:22You told the whole town we were getting married.
24:25You told everybody but me.
24:28You didn't even ask me whether I'd marry you or not.
24:31Well, I'm sorry. I just did it to save a couple of us from getting shot.
24:34Listen, I had to do something to stop Al Bixby.
24:37And it's a good thing, too, or I wouldn't be here right now...
24:40to tell you I love you and...
24:43and I would like to marry you.
24:46But if you're that sore and you don't want to...
24:49I didn't say I didn't.
24:56Hey, just one thing at a time.
24:59Have you forgotten about your mother?
25:02I'm going to see her. Would you like to come with me?
25:05We'll be all right, Doc?
25:08That's the only way it can possibly be, Ben. You'll never find a better time.
25:13Thanks, Doc.
25:17And that's the way Ben Adams and Kathy Lambert...
25:20came to know each other and fall in love and get married.
25:23That's the way it happened in Rising Springs Valley...
25:26that spring at roundup time.
