00:00On the western frontier, killing was usually sudden, uncomplicated, and violent, but sometimes
00:19more subtle methods were used and murder wore a disguise.
00:22One such case would have remained unsolved but for the ingenuity and courage of one man.
00:27Max Allen stars as The Frontier Doctor.
00:52A year ago, Tom Warren was one of the nicest fellas in town.
00:56Then one day he'd gone on a spree over to Elkton.
01:01The next day he woke up to find himself married to one of the gals from the Golden Horseshoe.
01:08That marriage was the cause of Tom Warren's downfall.
01:15Everyone in Rising Springs knew Flo had married him for the money he was to inherit, and so
01:20did Tom's father.
01:22So before he died, old Mr. Warren changed his will, cutting Tom off without a penny
01:27and leaving everything to his older brother, Seth.
01:31After that, Tom kind of went to pieces.
01:35I'd always liked Tom Warren, but nothing I said or did seemed to do him any good.
02:05Take it easy now, Tom.
02:07Take it easy nothing?
02:08He insulted me.
02:09No, he didn't.
02:10Come on now, let me buy you a cup of coffee.
02:11Let me go.
02:12Nobody's going to insult me.
02:13I'll kill him.
02:14Seth left orders not to serve him.
02:15My brother don't owe me.
02:16He ain't got no right giving orders.
02:17He pays the bills, don't he?
02:18Gosh, Doc, I didn't mean to hit him that hard.
02:19He's a sick boy, Sam.
02:20He'll be all right when he sobers up.
02:21He'll be all right.
02:22He'll be all right.
02:23He'll be all right.
02:24He'll be all right.
02:25He'll be all right.
02:26He'll be all right.
02:27He'll be all right.
02:28He'll be all right.
02:29He'll be all right.
02:30Gosh, Doc, I didn't mean to hit him that hard.
02:32He's a sick boy, Sam.
02:33He'll be all right when he sobers up.
02:35Help me get him to my buggy and I'll take him home.
02:37Sure, Doc.
02:49Well, what happened?
02:51Tom found out his brother canceled his credit at the bar.
02:54He better cause a ruckus.
02:56He hasn't done anything wrong.
02:57I'll take him home.
02:58All right.
03:00Come on, Diddy.
03:01We didn't know it then, but Sheriff Roberts' remark about a ruckus
03:04was the understatement of the year.
03:06Out at the Warren place, the real trouble was about to begin.
03:13Going to the bank?
03:15You know I am.
03:16You know I sold those horses this morning.
03:18Well, while you're in town, better fish Tom out of the gutter
03:21and bring him back here.
03:22He's your husband, I'm sorry to say.
03:24I'll stuff those words down your throat someday.
03:27Remember, you're both living here on charity.
03:30You made Tom a drunk, you sober him up.
03:51How much has he got?
03:52About a thousand in cash.
03:54You can keep it all, Hal, provided you get out of town afterwards.
03:57Don't worry.
04:06When I kill a man, I don't wait around town to answer questions.
04:24Let's go.
04:54Let's go.
05:24Go!
05:45Snap out of it!
05:47Tom!
05:48It's your brother, Seth.
05:49Snap out of it!
05:50Seth?
05:52Seth!
06:04Seth.
06:06Seth!
06:07Seth, it's me, Tom.
06:11Look, you've got to get to town and tell the sheriff.
06:13I'll take him on back to the ranch.
06:15Think you can make it?
06:17I guess so, Doc.
06:20Let's go.
06:27When will he come to?
06:28Five or ten minutes.
06:30He's sleeping off the opiate I gave him to set that collarbone.
06:33He'll be in pain for several days.
06:35Who's that with Tom?
06:38The sheriff.
06:39The sheriff?
06:41What does he want here?
06:43Imagine, he wants to ask some questions.
06:45Why question us?
06:48The front wall tried to hold up Seth and got itself killed.
06:51That's all there is to it.
06:52I don't know, Miss Warren.
06:54There's always a lot of questions in a case like this.
07:08How is he, Doc?
07:09He'll be all right.
07:10Did you identify the dead man?
07:12Yeah.
07:13Saddle-framed by the name of Ziegler.
07:15Al Ziegler?
07:16Oh.
07:17You know him?
07:18Well, I...
07:19I ran into him once or twice over in Elkton.
07:21That's mighty interesting.
07:23See, the way I figure it,
07:24somebody must have told him that Seth was carrying the money.
07:29Are you saying I did, Sheriff?
07:31You and your brother haven't been getting along.
07:34You did need the money, didn't you?
07:36That don't prove a thing.
07:37Plenty of other people knew Seth would be going to the bank.
07:40Sure.
07:41There was the man he sold the horses to
07:43and the wranglers who handled them.
07:45That's right, Ed.
07:46I figured Seth was going to the bank this afternoon.
07:49Just ask him.
07:51You've asked enough.
07:55Maybe so.
07:57Now, come on, Bill.
07:58You got to make out Ziegler's death certificate.
08:01I'll be around in the morning.
08:02Thanks, Doc.
08:03Thanks for everything.
08:16I got to get supper.
08:17I saw you and Hal Ziegler together yesterday.
08:19That don't mean a thing.
08:21For my money, it means the holdup was your idea.
08:25All right.
08:26So what if it was?
08:27By rights, it belongs to us as much as it does to Seth.
08:30You must be crazy.
08:33Look, Tom.
08:34He cheated you.
08:35He cheated you out of your inheritance.
08:37He treats you like a dog.
08:38He makes you sit up and beg for every cent.
08:41You want him out of the way as much as I do.
08:43Now, why don't you admit it?
08:46I...
08:48I did it for you, honey.
08:50I didn't want to tell you because...
08:52Get out.
08:53I knew that you wouldn't go through with it.
08:55You heard me.
08:56Get out.
08:57Wait a minute.
08:58Get out or I'll turn you over to the law.
09:00You wouldn't dare.
09:02Wouldn't I?
09:04Be your word against mine.
09:06You've got more reasons for wanting Seth dead than I have.
09:09It'd be worth the risk just to get rid of you.
09:11Get away from that door.
09:14Have you gone out of your mind?
09:16Put down that gun.
09:17No!
09:19I ain't going to let you wreck everything now.
09:21By everything, I guess you mean killing Seth for his money.
09:26Give me the gun.
09:27No!
09:29No!
09:33Oh!
09:36Tom!
09:38Tom!
09:39Tom!
09:41Tom!
09:52It was an accident.
09:54He grabbed my arm.
09:56I didn't mean to.
09:57It was an accident.
09:58See you hang for this.
10:00No!
10:01No, I didn't kill him.
10:02The gun just went off.
10:04That's not the way I'm going to tell it.
10:07Wait a minute.
10:09You say you're going to tell that I killed Tom?
10:13Then I got nothing to lose by killing you, now have I?
10:16As a matter of fact, I got a lot to gain.
10:19I'll get all the money.
10:22They'll hang you.
10:24Oh no, they won't.
10:25Because I'm going to make it look like you and Tom killed each other.
10:39No.
10:40No.
10:41No.
10:43No.
11:10This sign is right here, Doc.
11:11That'll close the whole case.
11:13Okay.
11:17Miss Warren.
11:18Here, sit down.
11:22They killed each other.
11:24What are you talking about?
11:25Tom.
11:27Seth.
11:29They had a fight.
11:30They're both dead.
11:31Come on, Bill.
11:32We better get out of here right away.
11:33You can ride with me, Miss Warren.
11:39On the way back to the ranch, Flo told her story.
11:41Shortly after we'd left, Seth had come into the living room
11:44and accused Tom of hiring Ziegler to kill him.
11:47Tom denied it, and a quarrel had developed.
11:49Flo had tried to intervene, but Tom had ordered her to keep out of it,
11:53shoved her into the bedroom, and locked the door.
11:56When she heard shots, she had climbed out through the bedroom window
11:59and came back through the front door and found the two of them lying dead.
12:07We found the room as Flo had described it.
12:09Seth lay crumpled by the locked bedroom door,
12:12but on the other side by the fireplace was only an ugly bloodstain.
12:16There was no sign of Tom.
12:23Sheriff Roberts issued a warrant for Tom's arrest,
12:26and for the next two days, posses combed the hills in search of the missing man.
12:31As near as I could tell, I was the only man in Rising Springs
12:34who didn't think Tom was guilty of murder.
12:39They found him yet, Doc?
12:41No, they haven't. I'd like to talk to you.
12:44What about?
12:46Well, aren't you going to ask me to sit down?
12:49Oh, sure.
12:53I see you keep the door bolted.
12:55Naturally, I'm here alone now.
12:58I've got a few things to do.
13:00I've got a few things to do.
13:02I've got a few things to do.
13:04I've got a few things to do.
13:06I've got a few things to do.
13:07Naturally, I'm here alone now.
13:10I suppose that's why you're so nervous and afraid.
13:13I've got no reason to be afraid.
13:18Haven't you?
13:20No.
13:22What was it you wanted?
13:26What's the matter?
13:29The window.
13:34Tom!
13:37Tom!
13:39Tom, wait a minute!
14:00Don't come any closer, mister.
14:02I'm too tired to run anymore.
14:04Have you lost your mind?
14:05Still we are.
14:08What's got into you?
14:14Get your hands up, mister.
14:16I already killed one man.
14:18So I don't mind killing another.
14:19You killed Seth?
14:20I guess that's what his name was.
14:21Yes, don't you know?
14:23What difference does it make?
14:26Seth was your brother.
14:28My brother?
14:30Don't you remember me?
14:32I don't remember anything.
14:33Amnesia.
14:35What?
14:37It's a loss of memory.
14:39Now look, you better give me that gun.
14:41No.
14:43I killed the man you said was my brother.
14:45You turned me over to the law.
14:47But maybe you aren't a murderer.
14:49If you don't remember, you don't know that you killed him.
14:52You'd be sticking my neck out.
14:54Isn't that better than staying out here in the hills
14:56and being hunted down like an animal?
14:58Now come on and give yourself up.
15:00I know I can help you.
15:02I don't know.
15:04What did you say your name was?
15:06Dr. Bill Baxter.
15:08I've known you since you were a kid.
15:10Doc, huh?
15:12Look, Doc, do something for my head.
15:15I've got a splitting headache.
15:17He's killing me.
15:32Down the road at the stage depot.
15:34He's trying to buy a ticket.
15:38Look, I...
15:40I knew it'd just be a matter of time
15:42before you found Tom and...
15:44Well, I thought I'd go over to Elkton
15:47and see if I couldn't get a lawyer to help Tom.
15:50Tom?
15:58The sheriff tells me he's got amnesia.
16:02I don't know nothing about amnesia.
16:05But if you try to tell me that he's crazy,
16:08I'll tell you that he's crazy.
16:10He's crazy.
16:12He's crazy.
16:14He's crazy.
16:16He's crazy.
16:18He's crazy.
16:20There's nothing wrong with Tom except loss of memory.
16:23What causes this amnesia or whatever you call it?
16:26Usually a severe emotional shock.
16:28Sometimes a blow on the head.
16:30In this case, it could be either.
16:32You mean to sit there and tell me
16:34you don't even recognize your own wife?
16:37As far as I know, I've never seen her before.
16:40I don't believe him.
16:42I think he's faking.
16:44What would he have to gain by faking?
16:46This way, he couldn't even prove he shot in self-defense.
16:48How much time,
16:50well,
16:52how long will it be before he gets his memory back?
16:57It's hard to say.
16:59In some cases, amnesia lasts only a few days,
17:01and I have seen it go on for several years.
17:03Yeah, well, he better snap out of it,
17:05snap out of it quick.
17:07The circuit court is sitting here next week.
17:09If he ain't cured by then, he won't have much of a chance.
17:11I'll do what I can.
17:12Do you mean you can cure him?
17:18As far as I know,
17:20there's no accepted cure for amnesia,
17:22but there's a man in Vienna
17:24been making some very interesting experiments
17:26with hypnosis.
17:29Hypnosis?
17:32Under hypnosis,
17:34your subconscious mind remembers
17:36what your conscious mind has rejected.
17:38What kind of hocus-pocus are you trying to pull, Bill?
17:39You don't know anything about hypnotism.
17:41I'll admit I've never hypnotized anyone,
17:43but I've read a lot of books on it,
17:45and I've seen it done.
17:47I'd like to try it.
17:49Are you serious?
17:51Oh, I don't know, Bill.
17:53That sounds mighty wild to me.
17:56Well, if you think it might work.
17:59No.
18:01I won't let him.
18:03Why not?
18:05You heard what he said.
18:07He don't know nothing about hypnosis.
18:09I'm not gonna let him experiment on my Tom.
18:13What do you say?
18:15It's all right by me, Doc.
18:19All right.
18:21But if you're gonna go through with this,
18:23I'm gonna be there.
18:25I was hoping you would be.
18:28I'll need time to call the Midwest Mental Clinic in Chicago
18:31for specific instruction and procedure.
18:33Suppose we all meet over at my place at four o'clock.
18:37Will that be convenient?
18:39Mrs. Warren?
18:41I'll be there.
18:45Goodbye, dear.
18:47I'll see you at four.
18:48Well, here she is, Doc.
18:50Let her in, Ed.
18:52All right.
18:56Tommy.
18:58Tommy.
19:00Tommy.
19:02Tommy.
19:04Tommy.
19:06Tommy.
19:08Tommy.
19:10Tommy.
19:12Tommy.
19:14Tommy.
19:16Tommy.
19:18Tommy.
19:22I was beginning to think you weren't gonna show up.
19:24I said I'd be here.
19:26We were just starting.
19:28Have a seat over there.
19:30I was just saying, I have no idea whether or not
19:32this will work or what it'll prove,
19:34but I've given Tom a mild sedative to relax him.
19:36You've drugged him.
19:38No, I'm not drugged.
19:40Give the Doc a chance.
19:42And that means being as quiet as you can.
19:44Would you take off the handcuffs?
19:46Is that absolutely necessary?
19:48Is it necessary that he be as relaxed
19:50and quiet as he possibly can?
19:52I don't know, Wright,
19:54but I never heard of such a bunch of nonsense.
19:58We have to keep the room as dark as we possibly can.
20:02Because almost any little thing
20:04will distract the subject.
20:06You remember what I told you, Tom?
20:08Yes, sir.
20:11I want you to relax,
20:13let my mind go blank,
20:15and think only the things you tell me to.
20:17You ready?
20:19Yes, sir.
20:29Now I want you to concentrate on my watch.
20:33Think of nothing but the lights
20:35that glisten and sparkle from it.
20:39You're all alone, Tom.
20:42Think of nothing but the lights.
20:43Your eyelids are getting heavy.
20:46They're so heavy,
20:48you can hardly hold them open.
20:51You're going to sleep, Tom.
20:54Deep, wonderful sleep.
21:00Open your eyes, Tom.
21:07I believe he's under a hypnotic trance.
21:08Well, I don't believe it.
21:10I can hardly believe it myself.
21:12Well, what are you going to do now?
21:14We'll question him.
21:17A man under a hypnotic trance
21:19won't knowingly tell a lie.
21:21His answers may not be admitted
21:23as evidence in the courtroom,
21:25but they'll be the truth nevertheless.
21:27Now go on, go ahead.
21:30What is your full name?
21:32I don't know.
21:34What is your full name?
21:36I don't know.
21:38Thomas Maxfield Warren.
21:42Why, he didn't even know that,
21:44and he's conscious state.
21:46I think he's remembering.
21:48You go on and ask him about his brother, Seth.
21:50Do you remember your brother?
21:52Yes.
21:54What happened the last time you saw him?
21:56He...
21:58was in bed.
22:00He'd been hurt in a holdup.
22:02I mean after that, Tom, what happened?
22:04I... I don't want to talk about it.
22:06Why?
22:08I don't know, she had a gun and...
22:13Come on, Bill.
22:15We'd better catch her.
22:17We'll never prove Tom's innocent.
22:29Howard, get up!
22:38Get up, Howard!
22:39Get up, Howard!
23:09Get up, Howard!
23:33Wake up, Tom. Wake up.
23:36Doc.
23:37Sheriff.
23:39What am I doing here?
23:41Sit down now. Everything's gonna be all right.
23:44Flo.
23:46We had a fight about Seth.
23:48She pulled a gun to keep me from leaving.
23:50Flo's dead, Tom.
23:52Before she died, she confessed killing Seth.
23:54Flo dead?
23:56Seth? What are you talking about?
23:58Don't you remember that little fake hypnosis act we pulled?
24:01In other words, you were faking.
24:03Well, I'll admit I did give Tom some of the answers before we started, but...
24:06You see, I never believed that he murdered his brother.
24:09And that left Flo, and she had a reason to kill.
24:12Oh.
24:14And with Tom and Seth out of the way, Flo would inherit all the war and money.
24:18That's right. I suspected that Flo had murdered Seth and tried to kill Tom.
24:23Oh, now I'm beginning to understand all this hocus-pocus business.
24:28Will someone please explain to me what's going on?
24:31Well, Tom, I gambled it.
24:32Well, Tom, I gambled it.
24:34Sometime during the act, I'd shock you into doing or saying something,
24:38and it would panic Flo into confessing.
24:40It sure works all right.
24:42Poor old Tom over there, he didn't even know what was going on.
24:46Now, wait a minute.
24:48If all this was a fake act,
24:51how do you explain his snapping out of it and getting his memory back?
24:55Well, amnesia's a funny thing.
24:57Sometimes another blow on the head will do it,
24:59and sometimes only time will take care of it.
25:02And again, maybe I did hypnotize him.
25:05You do remember, don't you?
25:07I'm afraid I do.
25:09Come on, boy, we'll take you home.
25:17With his unhappy marriage at an end,
25:20Tom Warren gave up drinking and turned into a useful citizen.
25:24Genuine hypnosis will no doubt play an important role in medicine in the future.
25:29I don't know whether I really hypnotized Tom or not,
25:32but all I know is I won't try hypnosis again without knowing a little more about it.
