00:00Buffalo Bill Jr.
00:07Buffalo Bill Jr.
00:10With his little sister, Calamity.
00:16Buffalo Bill Jr. brings you exciting action.
00:24Thrills and fun with Judge Ben Ferron Square Wiley.
00:31Buffalo Bill, Buffalo Bill, Buffalo Bill, Buffalo Bill Jr.
00:38In all its stampede and fury, the land run opened new frontiers for the pioneers of the early west.
00:57For many years after the Homestead Act of 1862, there were lots of these runs, or stampedes as some called them.
01:05Behind each one of them was a story, and one of the most exciting is a story dealing with the Pawnee Stampede.
01:23Hey, Calamity.
01:25Excuse me, Mr. Copeland, but I've got to get to the judge in a hurry.
01:28Eh, what's the rush? You must have pretty exciting news.
01:31You bet I have. The land commissioner's coming on today's stage.
01:34Best news we've had in a long time.
01:41Hey, Judge, he's coming. He's coming on today's stage.
01:44Calamity, can't you see I'm holding court?
01:47Now, as I was saying, Charlie.
01:49But, Judge.
01:50Calamity, the judge said he was busy. Now, you mind.
01:53But, Bill, this message.
01:55All right, young lady. What's so all-part important about that message?
01:59It just came over the telegraph. The land commissioner is actually coming to Wileyville.
02:04What's that?
02:05Say she's right, Judge. That's what it says.
02:07Well, why in tarnation didn't you say so?
02:10The case of Mrs. O'Neil versus Charlie is dismissed.
02:13Now, the court will pay for the missing apples in question.
02:16There's your money.
02:20I'd say you temper justice with mercy, Judge.
02:23Well, to tell you the truth, Reverend, I've borrowed some of Mrs. O'Neil's apples out of her orchard myself.
02:28And the best doggone apples in the county.
02:30Now, let me see that message.
02:37It's kind of hard to believe he's coming after all our fighting and hoping.
02:41And praying, Judge.
02:43The Reverend just been mighty anxious about this, too.
02:45Yes, we've been waiting a long time for the government to open up that Pawnee strip for homesteading.
02:49And it'll sure bring a lot of business to Wileyville and to the store.
02:53Yeah, I know, but we better not build our hopes up too high.
02:56The message just promises that he's going to take care of our request.
03:00He still has to make a decision, you know.
03:02Say, how about you two riding out and meeting the stage?
03:05A little buttering up won't hurt matters none, you know.
03:08We're on our way.
03:10That land commissioner's going to get a reception he don't expect, Vic.
03:13Yeah, we ought to make quite a welcoming committee.
03:17Come on.
03:27That land commissioner's going to get a reception he don't expect, Vic.
03:30Yeah, we ought to make quite a welcoming committee.

05:48That's just what whoever shot him thinks.
05:50But I'll tell you something.
05:52What's that?
05:53They're wrong.
05:58Ha!
05:59Ha!
06:00Ha!
06:01Ha!
06:13I just been telling Chief Whitebird here I'm gonna take real good care of him and his people, make sure nobody runs him off the land.
06:20As long as we pay in many skins.
06:23That's right Chief, as long as you pay.
06:25If you don't, I'll have to let the Great White Father open up the Pawnee Strip for Homestead.
06:30That'll drive you and your people right off.
06:33I don't think so, Chief.
06:35If you don't, I'll have to let the Great White Father open up the Pawnee Strip for Homestead.
06:40That'll drive you and your people right off.
06:43It's your choice, you make it.
06:46We pay.
06:53What happens when the Chief finds out about the head rights?
06:55How's he gonna find out?
06:57I'm the Indian agent here, all he knows about government policy is what I tell him.
07:03I'm sure not gonna tell him the government's willing to give 160 acres to each member of their tribe if the Pawnee Strip is open for Homestead.
07:10No sir, I'm sure not gonna tell him that.
07:18Well, I guess this just about stops everything, Reverend.
07:21A man gets tired of fighting after a while.
07:24A lot of people are counting on us, Judge Wiley.
07:27We must increase our efforts to open the Pawnee Strip.
07:30You're not gonna give up now, are you, Judge?
07:33How can you fight something you can't even see?
07:36Oh, if I could get my hands on those killers.
07:39Just get them in my gun sights.
07:41That would mean only more violence, Judge.
07:43It isn't the way to win this fight.
07:45Well, what can we do?
07:47Reason and logic and faith still win battles.
07:50We've got to take our problem to the people.
07:53Preaching is fine, Reverend, in your church.
07:56Now look, I've been sitting on that bench a lot of years.
08:00And I've had to use logic and reason and faith.
08:04But sometimes you've got to fight fire with fire.
08:08Well, perhaps you're right, Judge.
08:11But right or wrong, my help will have to come in a different way.
08:16I ain't meanin' to go against you, Reverend.
08:19I know you're not, Judge.
08:21But I've had a dream for a long time.
08:23Owning a piece of that Pawnee land myself.
08:25To build a new church.
08:27But if I have to fight by the devil's methods, I want no part of it.
08:30I think we got the devil beat this time, Reverend Jeff.
08:33The answer's right here in this briefcase.
08:35Where'd you get that?
08:36Well, it's land commissioners.
08:37After we finished making out the coroner's report, I went through his papers.
08:40What are they, Bill?
08:41Well, it's written authorization for the judge to circulate a petition.
08:44A petition?
08:45Mm-hmm.
08:46If the judge can get 2,000 bona fide signatures on a petition,
08:49the request to open the Pawnee Strip will be granted.
08:52Oh, then we can go ahead with it.
08:54I don't see why not, Judge.
08:55Then all we got to do...
08:562,000?
08:58Why, there ain't that many people in this area.
09:00Unless you count the horses and the jackrabbits.
09:03We'll get those signatures, even if we have to contact every person in the county.
09:07Oh.
09:08Well, how?
09:09We can't get all them people together.
09:12Look.
09:13I've got a printing press at the church.
09:15We'll outline everything on a circular.
09:16A convincing sales talk.
09:17Print them up and distribute them throughout the county.
09:19Say, that's fine, Reverend.
09:21Come on, Calamity.
09:22You too, Bill.
09:23We've got a lot of work to do.
09:25Reverend, you know something?
09:26I'm beginning to think you got something.
09:28And darn if I don't think we can do it.
09:30I know we can, Judge.
09:31We've got a dream to sell.
09:33Yeah.
09:34All we got to do is find 2,000 buyers.
09:45The next few days were busy ones for all of us.
09:48While the Reverend and I thought up what to say,
09:51Bill and Calamity loaded up the supplies we need for our campaign.
09:55That is, Bill and Calamity tried to load up the supplies.
10:00By the following day, we had close to 1,000 circulars printed up.
10:04But the big job still lay ahead of us,
10:07distributing the printed word to every living soul in the territory.
10:12Bill and Calamity started circulating the news in town,
10:15handing out papers to all the town folks
10:17and tacking up word of the petition in all the conspicuous places.
10:27They're flooding the town with those things.
10:29I don't know how Copeland expects us to stop them.
10:31Well, we can start by getting rid of some of those circulars.
10:39How's it going?
10:40Oh, just swell, Reverend.
10:42We're putting these up all over town.
10:44Good work.
10:45Bill, look.
10:48Hey, leave those alone.
10:51What do you think you're doing?
10:53What does it look like, Sonny?
10:55We're just removing some of this trash from the streets.
10:58Trying to keep our fair city clean.
11:00Well, maybe it'd be a lot cleaner if somebody removed you two.
11:03You gonna try to do it, kid?
11:05Easy, Bill. This can be settled without a fight.
11:08Preach is right, Sonny.
11:10We just don't like what you're trying to do.
11:12Are you against our project, gentlemen?
11:14That's the general idea, Reverend.
11:16We want to keep things the way they are.
11:18We don't want any homesteaders coming around.
11:20Destroying these circulars isn't very fair.
11:22You have a right to disagree with our ideas.
11:24But destroying someone else's property...
11:26Save it, Preacher.
11:27We ain't much interested in what you think.
11:30Hey!
11:31Sorry, Sonny. I didn't see those.
11:35Maybe you'll see this better.
11:43Bill, stop!
11:44Sorry, Reverend.
11:46But I gotta defend myself.
12:06Nice going, sis.
12:08Let's get these two Jaspers back over to the judge.
12:14You're not mad at us, are you, Reverend Jeff?
12:16But we just couldn't let those men do what they were doing.
12:19I don't approve of what you just did, Calamity.
12:23But I must admit you did it up in fine style.
12:35The two men were mighty unhappy when I found them guilty...
12:38of disturbing the peace and destroying our circulars.
12:41But the fines I imposed on them...
12:43was just about enough to pay for all our printing supplies.
12:47Bill seemed to think they were tied up...
12:49with the killing of the land commissioner.
12:51But there wasn't much we could do about proving it at the time.
12:58That evening, with Bill, Calamity...
13:00and the Reverend out distributing...
13:02I worked alone at getting out more circulars.
13:06Unfortunately, I had unexpected visitors.
13:09What do you want?
13:10Take it easy, Pop. You can't hurt me.
13:12You can't do this.
13:22You'll pay the penalty for this.
13:24Save it for your court, Pop.
13:26Destruction of property and malicious assault.
13:31Yeah, maybe that'll slow you down for a while.
13:40Did you get a good look at them, Judge?
13:42No, I didn't, Bill. They had masks on.
13:44But I wouldn't be a bit surprised...
13:46if they weren't the same two fellas you tangled with in town.
13:49We'll get them, Judge.
13:50And when we do, there won't be enough money...
13:52in the state of Texas to keep them out of jail.
13:54But what about the petition?
13:55Now we'll never be able to reach all the people.
13:58We'll reach them, honey. We'll tell them direct.
14:00We'll tell the folks to spread the word.
14:02Yes, why not?
14:03You could all be sort of deputy preachers, huh?
14:05Sure. And you can bet we'll talk them into it.
14:08And you can bet we'll preach the fanciest sermon...
14:10you ever heard, Reverend Jack.
14:16Our saddles were our pulpits.
14:18We talked and the people listened.
14:20Most agreed to pass the word along...
14:22knowing that opening the strip would help the whole territory.
14:26A lot of miles were traveled those next few days...
14:29with both vocal cords and backsides getting a good workout.
14:34But the results were gratifying.
14:36Before the week was out, just about everyone in the territory...
14:39had signed a petition asking the government...
14:41to open up the Pawnee Strip.
14:47Thank you, Charlie. Much obliged to you.
14:49Is that all of them, Reverend?
14:51I think so. What's the total now, Bill?
14:54Well, with Charlie's, it's 1,999.
14:58Oh, are you sure you counted it right?
15:00No mistake. We need one more signature.
15:03Well, good gracious.
15:05I thought every living soul had already signed this thing.
15:09Now, let me see.
15:13Great Jumpin' Prairie Dogs.
15:15What is it, Judge?
15:16It's me! I forgot to sign the blame thing myself.
15:21I just got so plumb busy, I guess I just overlooked it.
15:25Ben Wiley.
15:27There we are.
15:29Number 2,000.
15:31We did it! We did it! No one can stop us now.
15:34Can they, Judge?
15:35No siree. We'll get this petition off right away.
15:38And from here on, it's just a question of time.
15:48There's no use stopping it, boss.
15:50The Pawnee Strip's gonna be open for sure.
15:53All right, but it's gonna be a while yet.
15:55We can still make a payoff.
15:56How? As an Indian agent, you're not eligible to stake the claim.
16:00That's right.
16:01But when the run does come, we'll bring some of the boys over from Boulder City.
16:04Now, mind you, we can't stop the homesteaders,
16:06but we can sure delay them long enough for our boys to get the best land.
16:09What about Chief Whitebird? What are you gonna tell him?
16:11Well, I'll just have to convince him there's still a chance to stop the rush.
16:15Then I'll have to keep him convinced until the day it starts.
16:22It was just two months to the day after the petition was sent off
16:25that we got official word telling us the Pawnee Strip was being thrown open.
16:30People from all over the Southwest started pouring into Wileyville,
16:33filling our little town to most overflowing.
16:36And finally, the great day came.
16:39The rush was less than an hour away when we headed out of town.
16:43Me, Bill, and Calamity were just going along to watch the fun,
16:46but I think we were as excited as those like the Reverend
16:49who was really gonna make the run.
16:52The months of hoping and waiting were behind us now.
16:55But though we didn't know it at the time,
16:57there was still plenty of trouble ahead.
17:12All right, now remember.
17:14When the stampede starts, you don't follow the straight line.
17:17You take the long way to Pawnee Valley and stake out the best claims.
17:20Are you sure they'll have enough time?
17:22Yeah.
17:25We're gonna make time with this dynamite.
17:27Everybody else will be taking the short way to the valley through Thunder Canyon.
17:31Only when they get to Thunder Canyon, there won't be any way through.
17:34Stan, you and Vic will stay with me. You three boys get going.
17:37I want you in the starting line when that cannon goes off.
17:43Give me a hand on this stuff. We'll get it outside.
17:49Agent Copeland is a liar.
17:51Whitebird.
17:53Boss, he heard you.
17:55Stan, you're getting too smart.
17:58What do you want, Chief?
18:00You promised land not be taken from my people.
18:02You lie all the time.
18:04That's right, Chief. I knew all along
18:06the government was gonna give a quarter section apiece to your people.
18:09But it would have been very good business for me to tell you about it, now would it?
18:12You cheat Indians.
18:14And now you cheat on white brothers.
18:17You know, for a redskin, you catch on real fast.
18:20You kill many with your plan to make an explosion at Thunder Canyon.
18:23Chief Whitebird would not let you do this.
18:28Have to get rid of him later.
18:30Now go on.
18:51Soldiers were in charge of starting the land rush
18:54to see that everyone got a fair start.
18:57But some people on the line didn't mean to play fair.
19:02I sure hope everything goes all right, Judge.
19:05Oh, stop worrying, Calamity. Nothing's gonna go wrong.
19:08Nothing at all.
19:21Now get the horses back out of the way and take cover.
19:23I'll be right with you.
20:21Hey, here comes Chief Whitebird.
20:33What happened to you, Chief?
20:35Much trouble come from Agent Copeland.
20:38You must ride fast, young Bill, to Thunder Canyon.
20:40What's Copeland up to?
20:42Him down on my canyon.
20:44Have two other men with you.
20:47There goes the one-minute signal.
20:49There'll be many killed if Copeland and his two men carry out their plan.
20:52We'll have to stop them, Bill.
20:54We? You riding with me?
20:56Yes.
20:58But what about the church site, Reverend Jeff?
21:00I'm afraid that'll have to wait, Calamity.
21:02Some extreme circumstances have come up at Thunder Canyon.
21:06Better get in the wagon, Chief.
21:16Woo!
21:20Woo-hoo!
21:22Woo-hoo!
21:24Woo-hoo!
21:30Woo!
21:32Woo-hoo!
21:34Let's go!
21:46Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
21:53oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
22:23oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
22:29what are you doing, judge?
22:32There's no rule that says how far a man has to go over the line, so I'm staking out this claim for the Reverend's Church!
22:44Well, sir, Bill and Reverend Jeff had to do some mighty fancy riding to outdistance that stampede.
22:53While on their orders, Copeland's men veered off to take the long way around Thunder Canyon.
23:08All set.
23:38Here they come, boss.
24:08Let's go.
24:38They made it, Reverend.
24:50They made it to the canyon.
24:54Thunder Canyon almost lived up to its name, didn't it?
24:56It certainly did.
24:58For a peaceful man, you sure pack a lot of thunder in your fist.
25:01Well, for the first and last time, I hope.
25:04What made you decide to ride with me back up there at the starting line?
25:07Well, when Chief Whitebird told us that there were three of them here to dynamite the canyon, I didn't like the odds.
25:12I decided to even them up.
25:14Well, there's still only two of us here.
25:16No, Bill. There's you and me and the good Lord.
25:30Buffalo Bill Jr.
25:34Now with his horse and with his gun, he's not afraid of anyone.
25:39Cause no one's quicker on the draw or quicker to defend the law.
25:44Buffalo Bill Jr.
25:47Buffalo Bill Jr.
25:49He's the son of the son of a gun.
25:52Buffalo Bill.
25:53Buffalo Bill.
25:54Buffalo Bill.
25:55Buffalo Bill Jr.
