Scaling is the procedure of removing plague and calculus from the teeth surface. these deposits are formed due to accumulation of food debris, saleva and bacteria. This can not be completly removed by normal day to day brushing. So we need professional help for its removed. Scaling is recommended once in a year but in few cases of severity once in 6 months also can be done.
Generally the procedure is not painful. But slight bleeding may occur as the deposits cause gum inflammation and touching the gum with the instrument cause bleeding. Previously dentist use manual instruments but now a days ultrasonic scalers are used to save time and labour. As shown in the video. The ultrasonic scaler consists of a hand pices with a variety of tips which are used depending on the type of tartar being removed. The tips vibrate at a very fast rate and are cooled down by a water spray. sometimes teeth become sensitive after scaling but it recover soon.
Scaling is recommended for all adults indivisual for prevention for any gum disease. but is prohibited in 1st and 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
