In today's harsh job market, you may think becoming a nurse, accountant, teacher, or engineer will help you survive, but, surprisingly, the Modesto Junior College in Modesto, California is seeing a spike in other less competitive positions, such as dental assistants, due to their high demand.

While unemployment is spiking, so is attendance in classes at Modesto Junior College and trade schools valley wide, according to education and training officials.

Modesto Junior College's dental assisting certificate takes about two semesters to earn. After graduation, dental hygienists can move up in the profession, said Bronda Nidey, the program's director. Wages start at $10 to $12 an hour.
