The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that area architecture firms are struggling in the poor economic climate and that layoffs and hiring freezes have officially hit the area.

Richard De Young, president of WTW Architects, told the paper that he doesn't know of any firms that are currently hiring. He also said the same trend is being experienced on the national level.

The American Institute of Architects has reported that its Architecture Billings Index, an indicator of future construction activity, is at an all-time low.

De Young went on to say that WTW has not yet cut staff, but that others haven't been so lucky.
