Jacques Chirac, Former French President, Dead at 86

Jacques Chirac,
Former French
President, Dead at 86 Chirac was a popular two-term
president who served from 1995 until 2007. His death was confirmed
by French authorities. Chirac was a vocal supporter
of the European Union and an
outspoken opponent of
the U.S. war in Iraq. As an 18-year mayor of Paris,
he cultivated a "man of
the people" persona. Although widely considered
a political conservative, Chirac
"was able to bridge the
left-right divide” of his country. In 2011, Chirac's legacy was
tarnished when he was
convicted for embezzlement. Regardless of the conviction,
Chirac remained one of
the most popular French
politicians of modern times.
