Brown Rudnick layoffs clumsily announced

The Boston-based law firm Brown Rudnick is the latest to sacrifice associates to the global economic crisis. Yesterday they parted ways with 20 attorneys, 3 paralegals, and 20 other staffers.

Brown Rudnick raised eyebrows by announcing the layoffs to the whole firm, via email, before any individual associates were informed. Employees were asked not to approach any directors about the layoffs.

The layoffs affected just under 10 percent of attorneys, paralegals and staff. No first-year associates were let go. The firm blamed the economic downturn for the need to cut body count.

The laid off workers were promised severance and out-placing assistance.
