Dr Amy Jo's Wild Life (Part 1)

This is the story of a modern day Dr. Doolittle with her own personal wildlife sanctuary, a local veterinarian who’s life is dedicated to caring for unusual and extraordinary animals. These animals have become more than her patients or pets, they have become her family!

Dr. Amy Jo Pilmer is from San Angelo, TX, in a family that thrived in an outdoors lifestyle. “I’ve probably had the lifetime that every kid would dream of. We were very outdoorsy…we grew up hunting and fishing.” Even today, when she can, Amy Jo is her happiest just being outdoors with the sun on her back and her line in the water, like she used to with her Dad.

At a young age, Amy Jo got into a car accident that changed her life forever. She stopped taking an interest in outside activities or hanging out with friends, or doing the typical social things that young adults do.

What saved her life and brought her back into the world was her love of animals. Coming from a veterinary family, she got some hands-on experience helping her uncle at his practice in Winters, TX, which cultivated her love of veterinary medicine. “When I started working for him, I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life."

Amy had a tough four years working through Veterinary School, but saw it through and has since purchased a clinic in Fredericksburg, TX, which she runs with a veterinary partner. “We run it 365 days a year, all night, all day, all weekend.” With animals, there are always unplanned emergencies and the community knows that Amy Jo will always be there to help.

But, Amy is not your typical veterinarian. She treats all kinds of weird and unusual animals and has turned her house into a wildlife reserve with multiple fenced in areas, animal beds and a free-for-all inside. She has deer that run around her yard, raccoons that treat her like a mom, squirrels that hang out on top of her head, baby coyotes that like to cuddle, and a pet Oryx named Jolene.

Amy Jo has as straightforward approach to enjoying life and staying happy. “Taking advantage of a cold beer and just being outside.” Words to live by.
