Justin Trudeau’s Popularity
Plunges Amid Scandal In 2015, Justin Trudeau promised to mend Canada's relationship with its Indigenous people. Trudeau is now on the defense, as accusations
of misconduct mount against him. According to initial claims, Trudeau pressured
attorney general Jody Wilson-Raybould to
not pursue criminal charges against SNC-Lavalin. The large engineering firm faced a decade-long ban on federal contracts if found guilty of alleged bribery in Libya. The collapse of SNC-Lavalin would’ve
been devastating for Trudeau’s home
province of Quebec. Wilson-Raybould,
the only Indigenous politician in cabinet, was said to have resisted Trudeau's demands for leniency. Shortly afterwards, she was demoted
from her role as top prosecutor,
and named the head of veteran affairs. She subsequently resigned, casting doubt
onto Trudeau’s true intentions and eroding
his relationship with Indigenous leaders. Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs, via statement
