Natya is the Sanskrit word for Dramatic Arts. Hence the title can be loosely translated as the Digest of Theatre or Manual of Dramatic Arts.

It is notable as an ancient in-depth work about Indian art forms, including concept of theatre, dance, music, poetics and religious aesthetics.

It is believed to have been written by a Brahman priest called Bharata Muni (1st century BCE – 3rd century CE).

The text is divided into 36 chapters containing more than 6,000 poetic verses describing fine arts, which is estimated to be more than 2,500 years old.

The experts state that the first chapter of the Natya Shastra gives a semi-historical and mostly mythological account of the creation of the work.

This content has also inspired secondary literature like Sanskrit Bhasya (reviews and commentaries). The most trusted commentary on the Natya Shastra is the 10th century Abhinavabharati by Abhinavagupta.

The theatre artist and classical dancers still treat it as a traditional encyclopedia on the performing arts.
