1 The term Sapta Puri is noted for those seven sacred cities that hold the holiest Tirthas pilgrimage centers in India.
2 The Garuda Purana credited these seven sacred places namely, Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Haridwar), Kasi (Kashi), Kanci (Kanchipuram), Avantika (Ujjain) and Dvaravati (Dwarka) as the granter of Moksha.
3 In Hindu mythology, these Sapta Puri have been mentioned as the sites where the gods and goddess have descended as avatars.
4 Each of these cities is equally famous for the shrines, religious events and spectacular fairs (Mela) held there on annual basis.
5 Most of these cities are stretched along the banks of the Ganges, which is the most venerated river of India.
6 These cities annually draw scores of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain pilgrims to its temples and waterfront.
