This man wanted to show people the joys of running a 5K marathon over seven different bridges. Amazingly, he ran all around a city while talking about the local community and giving tips on how to stay motivated during a marathon.

00:00Good morning, my friends, from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
00:14How did I get here?
00:15I don't know.
00:16It's my first time here.
00:17I don't even know why I'm here.
00:18Actually, I do know why I'm here.
00:19I'm here to run a marathon.
00:20I'm here to run 26.2 miles.
00:23My friend Mindy said, hey, come run our marathon.
00:25So I'm here.
00:26I'm here at the Seven Bridges Marathon.
00:27This is one of the bridges right here.
00:29It's dark because, well, it's early in the morning.
00:32It's a little colder than I thought Tennessee would be, but you know what?
00:36My favorite way to explore a new city is by running, and I'm going to see 26 miles of
00:41Chattanooga today.
00:42It's going to be beautiful.
00:43Hopefully, I'm going to make some new friends.
00:44I'm going to show you some beautiful sights of a stunning city in the south, and have
00:49a great day.
00:50You know what I love?
00:51I love early morning pump-up music at races.
00:54It gets me going.
00:56Nothing like a little techno at 6.30 a.m.
00:58Is this the warm-up party?
00:59Yeah.
01:00Yeah, all right.
01:01I like it.
01:02I'll warm up, man.
01:03We are heading to the start line, which is really good.
01:10I want to start running so I can warm up.
01:12It is cold out.
01:13All right, here we go.
01:15Another race.
01:16It's crazy.
01:17I've been doing this all my life, ever since I was a little kid, running, running, running.
01:22The goal today is to have a lot of fun.
01:26Usually, when I start a race, I want to run as fast as I can.
01:30Not this race.
01:31I just want to cruise and get to know the city, and have fun.
01:34That's the number one goal.
01:35Have fun.
01:36I can do that, right?
01:37The number two goal is to warm up.
01:38It's really cold out.
01:42We are on bridge one of seven.
01:44I actually think there's eight bridges we're going to run over today.
01:48Pretty cool.
01:49I like this colorful art right there.
01:53That's cool.
01:54Here's a pro tip for anybody out there wanting to run a marathon for the first time.
01:59Just walk through the aid stations.
02:00Just get your water.
02:01Just chill.
02:02Stop.
02:03Enjoy it.
02:04Then start running again.
02:05Let's get a high five.
02:06High five.
02:07High five.
02:08Thank you.
02:09High fives really just charge me up.
02:11I don't need anything else besides high fives.
02:13Look at that.
02:14I love it.
02:15Woo.
02:16Yes.
02:17You know what?
02:18I love aid stations, not so much because of the water and the Gatorade, but because everybody
02:24at aid stations are always psyched because a half marathon just started.
02:28That's who all these people are.
02:29Good morning everybody.
02:30Good work.
02:31Good work.
02:32Keep it up.
02:33Keep it up.
02:34Woo.
02:35I find that if I cheer for other people while I'm in the race, it in turn pumps me up.
02:44This must be bridge number two.
02:46Look at this view.
02:48Oh yeah.
02:49This is a beautiful way to wake up on a Sunday morning, right?
02:55Another thing I really like about marathons is that you can stop and go to the bathroom.
02:58If you're running a 5K or a 10K, it's really going to affect your time if you stop and
03:02go to the bathrooms.
03:03Marathon, there's no hurry.
03:04It's more important to be comfortable.
03:06Okay.
03:07Let's go.
03:08Woo.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Yeah.
03:11All right.
03:12We're on bridge number three and the sun has just come up and it feels so good.
03:18You know what I like about this race?
03:22That we're running along a lot of these cool pedestrian paths.
03:26They're all wooded in the parks.
03:29It's beautiful.
03:31What I really like about running along these paths is that you can run in the grass along
03:34the side and it's just less impact on your body.
03:38All the pavement really does a number on me.
03:41All right.
03:42We're on bridge number four.
03:44Only four more to go.
03:45How are you feeling?
03:46Feeling good.
03:48Feeling good.
03:54All right.
03:5513 miles.
03:56You know what that means.
03:57Halfway there.
03:58Halfway in a marathon is the point where you kind of relax.
04:03You get your breathing set.
04:06You get your stride going on your feet right there.
04:10And you get ready for the next 13 miles.
04:14I see some music right here.
04:16Here we go.
04:17Here we go.
04:20Oh, yeah.
04:21Thank you.
04:22A little dance break.
04:23Yeah, man.
04:25See you guys later.
04:26Thank you.
04:27Yeah.
04:28Here's another pro tip for running a marathon.
04:30It might seem counterintuitive, like a waste of energy, but I recommend dancing whenever
04:35possible.
04:37Again, takes your mind off running, takes your mind off the pain, puts you in a happy
04:42place.
04:43Woo.
04:44We're on a big bridge right now.
04:47That's the Tennessee River down there.
04:50And this is a highway.
04:54These cups are not full of gatorade or water.
04:57They're full of gummy bears.
04:58Thank you, guys.
04:59You're the best.
05:00How do you drink gummy bears?
05:02These gummy bears are hard to eat.
05:05They're very chewy.
05:06How you doing, brother man?
05:07Hey, man.
05:08I'm doing good.
05:09Woo.
05:10What are you guys doing today?
05:11Oh, you know, we're just running.
05:13Hey, it's a good day for it.
05:15It's a good day for running.
05:16Mile 17, buddy.
05:18We got this.
05:20Mile 17.
05:23These are the miles where you start making friends.
05:25You're like, oh, you're in pain.
05:26Let's talk.
05:27Yeah, exactly.
05:29Help me get my mind off the pain.
05:31What's your name?
05:32Kevin.
05:33Kevin from Canada.
05:34Windsor.
05:35Windsor, Canada's first ever marathon.
05:37Hi, Colorado.
05:38Hi.
05:39You feeling good?
05:40No.
05:41I think I'm on bridge number six right now.
05:44I don't remember.
05:45But this one has a great view.
05:47Look at this.
05:50I think I'm at about mile 20-ish.
05:52And this is when a marathon really starts.
05:56Usually mile 20 is when it gets hard.
05:58That's when you need to dig deep.
06:00And just enter the pain cave.
06:03Embrace the pain.
06:05Put your head down.
06:07Think happy thoughts.
06:08And move forward.
06:11That's all you can do.
06:12One foot in front of the other.
06:13Looking awesome.
06:14High five.
06:15High five.
06:16High five.
06:17High five.
06:18High five.
06:19High five.
06:20All right.
06:21We are back on my favorite pedestrian riverfront path.
06:22I like it here.
06:23I'm a fan of Chattanooga.
06:26Boom.
06:27High five.
06:28All right.
06:29The volunteers need love, too.
06:30It's moments like these in a race.
06:32You know, I'm looking at the finish line pretty soon.
06:35And I just get overwhelmed with a feeling of gratefulness.
06:38Like, I'm so grateful that my body can do this.
06:41That I have the strength to run 26 miles.
06:44And do it mostly with a smile.
06:47And it's just fun.
06:49You know, I've been a runner all my life.
06:51Ever since I was a little kid.
06:53When I was a kid, I could never have fathomed running 26 miles.
06:58That just seems crazy.
06:59I always ran 5 and 10Ks.
07:01But it's totally possible.
07:03You just keep moving one foot in front of the other.
07:05And you get there.
07:07And it's not just me.
07:09Everybody's getting there.
07:10Everybody around me.
07:11They're accomplishing a huge goal.
07:14And that's cool.
07:15Did I get a high five?
07:16Yeah, buddy.
07:17Woo, yeah.
07:18You know, I really like this race.
07:20It doesn't have the huge numbers of New York.
07:23Or Boston.
07:24Live music on every corner.
07:26But it does have a very good tight-knit community feeling.
07:30All the volunteers are just psyched to be out here.
07:34Even in the cold.
07:35They're high-fiving.
07:37And it's just fun.
07:39Cool.
07:41Bike share.
07:43You know me.
07:44I love bikes.
07:47I just need to get to that bridge.
07:49That way.
07:50And I'm home free.
07:51This is cool right here.
07:52This is a bamboo forest.
07:54Reminds me of being in Asia.
07:56Yeah, thank you.
07:58Thank you.
07:59Alright, this is the last bridge.
08:01Woo.
08:03Coming into the straightaway.
08:05High five.
08:06High five.
08:08Alright.
08:10Yes.
08:11Woo.
08:12My favorite feeling in the world is the finish line.
08:15Here we go.
08:16Finish it strong.
08:17High five.
08:18Way to go.
08:19Woo, thank you.
08:20Bam.
08:22Woo.
08:23Feels good.
08:24Thank you, Chattanooga.
08:26Thank you, Seven Bridges Marathon.
08:27That was awesome.
08:28You got a cool city.
08:30Aw, thank you.
08:33Woo hoo.
08:35Blue Rhino, baby.
08:36Look at that guy.
08:37Good job.
08:38Thank you.
