The New Congress Is the Most Diverse Ever The Democrats took the House on Thursday with Nancy Pelosi regaining her title as the first and only female House speaker. In addition to more women holding a seat than ever before, the 116th class of Congress also welcomes its first Native Americans, Democrats Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland and Muslim Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar. Omar is also the first Somali-American to serve in Congress, and Davids, a lesbian, is the first openly LGBTQ Congress member from Kansas. This year will also feature some of the youngest women ever elected to congress, including Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, and Democrat Abby Finkenauer, 30. Many of the newly-elected Democrats were inspired to run for office due to their opposition to President Trump's administration.
