In the depths of mid-winter we celebrate Chanukah --
the Festival of Lights, or Feast of Dedication.

Chanukah recalls the time -- just 200 years ago --
when the Greek Empire occupied the land of Israel --
and put false idols in our hallowed Temple.

A local priest called Matityahu slayed one of the Greeks ---
and called on the people to drive these foreigners from our land.
Led by his eldest son Yehuda Macabi,
A Jewish army defeated the Greeks, reestablishing an independent Israel.
Synch Arieh: They managed to win the revolt, taking back the temple. To rededicate the Temple required light, the Menorah, the great gold candle Lavara, it was an eight day process to rededicate the temple, yet there was only enough oil for one night. Acting in faith they lit that vile of oil.
Prayer:

Mi Kamocha Ba'elim Adonai
Mi Kamocha Ne'edar Bakodesh
Morat Tehilot
Oseh Peleh

That oil miraculously lasted all eight days and all eight nights.

While Chanukah remembers the past victory against the Greeks,
today we face a new occupation -- that of the Roman Empire.

The Romans control everything.
They even keep the High Priests' ceremonial robes and accessories.

Every time the High Holydays arrive,
the High Priest has to go up and be given these vestments,
so that he can perform his duties in the Temple.

Some of us that feel that the Priests often follow the letter of the law --
but have forgotten its spirit.

They let the accursed Romans make us slaves -- ......
and allow merchants to turn the Temple into a den of thieves.

When Yeshua overturned the money-changers' tables,
many were ready to take up arms and
follow him in a rebellion against Rome.

Synch Arieh I don't believe when he turned the tables he did it because of any kind of political feelings. No. I believe it came just from his love to his father, and he wanted his father's place to be clean, clean of corruption.

Our Messiah is a messenger of Peace --
not a bringer of War.
As he said -
Peace I leave with you, ...
My peace I give to you; ... (John 14:27)
