Scientists Announce Plan To Sequence Genomes Of All ‘Complex Life’ On The Planet

November 1 marks the launch of the Earth BioGenome Project, an effort to sequence the genomes of all “complex life” on the planet.
Students and teachers visiting George Washington's Virginia estate recently found a roughly 6,000-year-old stone axe on the property. It was located in what is now Mount Vernon's African American cemetery, a site said to have been used by Native American communities long ago. "The axe provides a window onto the lives of individuals who lived here nearly 6,000 years ago. Artifacts, such as this, are a vital resource for helping us learn about the diverse communities who shaped this landscape throughout its long history," Sean Devlin, Mount Vernon's curator of archaeological collections, commented. Once catalogued, cleaned, and preserved, the axe will join the estate's collection of over 50,000 artifacts.
