RENAISSANCE: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly Sides Of An Epic Era

The renaissance era was more than just gorgeous paintings and buildings... from Raining cats and dogs to barbers performing surgeries while giraffes roamed the city, here are the most unexpected things that happened during the renaissance era.

Renaissance was known as an era of rebirth after the middle ages, but not everything flourished as expected. the northern Italians cities did very well and flourished. But Rome was left in ruins. Once a city with about a million-people living in it, during the renaissance even the pope in the 1300s left to a nicer castle in Avignon, France for about 70 years and returned at the beginning of the renaissance. While the pope was gone, most of the monies that came from pilgrimage and donations, his guards and treasury, all vanished leaving the city in even further decay. With the Pope back in town, the city started flourishing again and Michelangelo was hired in 1508 to paint the Sistine chapel, named after Pope Sixtus IV who had it build. It took Michelangelo 4 years painting it upside down!!!

At the end of the middle ages while the black death or the bubonic plague wiped most of the European population. All over Europe, since there was a lot of open lands in the 14th to the 16th century as well as possibilities for the masses to climb the social and political class, a new society was formed! And art became THE way to show your status, especially in Florence, Italy.

Not really making any sense on why this became a THING but during the renaissance, dogs and crow droppings where used for colic and dysentery…. Try that now a days and, you will probably end up with both together! If that was not enough, use pig’s urine to treat your next fever…
