Afghan filmmaker Tarique Qayumi dramatizes his country’s seismic political shifts through the deceptively small-scale story of how a family’s shared passion becomes a clandestine act of resistance. Growing up through the modernizing regime of Mohammed Zahir Shah and the progressively more authoritarian governments that succeed it, Arian (Haji Gul) eventually sees his childhood passion, kite-flying, outlawed; but when his young daughter pleads with him to teach her how to fly a kite, he risks harsh retribution to pass on this family tradition.
