How to Make a Simple Router Bit Organizer

The organizer is made from 1-½” wide ¾” thick birch plywood. I have some plywood strips left from my foot stool build so I’ll be using those in this project. For this build you’ll need 2 pieces 24” long and 10 pieces 15” long. My design has the slats spaced 1-½” apart from each other, there will be total of eight slats for the router bits.

I marked the center line on the slats and I then measured the centers for the holes, the holes are spaced about 1-3/16” from center to center. There space for 13 router bits per slat. My router only takes ¼” and 5/16” shafts so I made three slats with ¼” holes and other three with 5/16” holes. Drill press really helps when you have many holes to drill. I left two slats without holes so I have space for ½” shaft router bits if I ever decide to get a better router. I also marked and drilled pilot holes on the longer pieces. Originally I planned to make dadoes for the slats but this is just a shop project and I didn’t have that much time to make this video so I just went with simple butt joints. I sanded the slats to remove any pencil marks.

The assembly itself is really straight forward. I just used #8 screws to butt joint the slats to the longer pieces. I didn’t bother to use wood glue but glue wouldn’t hurt. There won’t be that much load on the slats so I believe just screws will do just fine. There’s space to add 7 more slats if you want to have more space to store your router bits. There is space for 78 router bits, but you could make the holes nearer each other. I made my organizer spacious to protect my fingers from sharp router bits. After I had finished assembly I gave everything a quick sanding to make it look better. You probably should put some finish on the organizer; I didn’t because I’m lazy. You could also add some edge banding to hide the edge of the plywood.

The organizer is attached to the wall with some longer screws; use a stud finder to locate the studs.
