Trump: Trade Tariffs Will Be Implemented In A 'Loving, Loving Way'

President Trump on Tuesday made additional remarks about trade tariffs.

President Trump on Tuesday offered assurances that the implementation of trade tariffs on steel and aluminum will be handled in a "loving, loving way" and accepted by other nations.  He made the comment during a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven.  A reporter asked Trump how he intended to put tariffs in place without "this escalating into a trade war."
"You know, when we're behind on every single country, trade wars aren't so bad," the president first noted. "You understand what I mean by that? When we're down by $30 billion, $40 billion, $60 billion, $100 billion, the trade war hurts them; it doesn't hurt us." He then mentioned the additional deficit that results from the U.S. providing military aid and said such losses need to be straightened out. Trump went on to suggest the tariffs will be accepted by other nations, commenting, "we'll do it in a very loving way. It will be a loving, loving way."
"They'll like us better and they will respect us much more…I mean, two countries have said, 'We cannot believe, to be honest with you, we've gotten away with this so long,'" the president further remarked. Reactions thus far from a number of nations do not suggest that level of acceptance. The European Union has said that if the U.S. goes through with imposing a 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum, EU will place tariffs on American goods like bourbon, peanut butter, and orange juice, CNBC reports.
