Die From the Flu According to the CDC, 22 children have died from Feb. 4 to Feb. 10. The total number of pediatric deaths this flu season is 84. The CDC still urges people to get vaccinated, even though recent reports say the flu shot is only 39 percent effective against this year's prominent strain – H3N2. The CDC said the shot is 59 percent effective against H3N2 for children six months to 8 years old. The vaccine will be effective for the other flu strains beginning to circulate this season.
