Hikkalappana / Hikallu Betta, (Hikallu Venkataramana Swamy Temple) one of the virgin getaways on the periphery of Bangalore, will certainly refresh you. Ensure that you keep the place clean. About 66 km from Bangalore is one such place — Hikkalappana Betta, a typical wooded hillock strewn with large boulders. Situated on the periphery of Tumkur district, it is not a well-known picnic spot as yet.
Hikkalappana Betta is also known as Kurmagiri Kshetra as it is believed that the main idol at the temple is in the form of a tortoise or Kurma avatar (tortoise incarnation of Lord Vishnu). The deity, Lord Venkataramana, is called Hikkallappa here. The original black granite idol is said to be of Saligrama stone. There is another idol of Lord Venkataramana or Balaji, which was installed in 1999. This strikingly beautiful black statue was presented to this temple by the Tirumala Tirupathi Devaswom Trust of Tirupathi, which has recognised this temple as one of the 108 sub-shrines of the original at Tirumala. Hikkalappana Betta offers a wonderful combination of an ancient temple, forests, tough trekking paths and a fantastic view of nature. Hikkalappana Betta is a clean place so visitors are requested to carry back all the non-biodegradable wastes like plastic covers, plates, bottles, etc and maintain the place in its pristine state.
