'Lucky Escape' for Orangutan Found With Bullet Wound in His Face

International Animal Rescue (IAR) shared footage of a large male orangutan that had suffered a bullet wound to the face being taken into its care. The IAR said the injury was likely caused by an air gun.Given the name Lulup by IAR, the primate is said to be over 25-years-old and had been brought to the organization’s attention by a group of locals who tend to a community garden in Riam Berasap, West Borneo, which Lulup had been frequently causing damage to.Alongside representatives from the Natural Resources Conservation Centre and Gunung Palung National Park, Lulup was brought down from the trees nearby the garden using a tranquilizer and a large net.A Facebook post on the rescue noted that Lulup was immediately treated for the bullet wound. “It is heartbreaking to see these Critically Endangered great apes being subjected to persecution, mutilation and even murder when they lose their forest home and go in search of food,” the IAR post added.“Judging by the injury to his cheekpad, he had a lucky escape and our team arrived in the nick of time.” Credit: International Animal Rescue (IAR) via Storyful
