Basic income has gained mainstream interest as a way to reduce poverty. The system involves giving people a standard salary just for being alive, no strings attached. For 13 months GiveDirectly began an experiment in Kenya, in which villagers are allotted $22 a month for the next 12 years. The participants have been disproving the biggest misconception about basic income — that people who receive free money will stop working.
