Former Senator Rick Santorum on Sunday remarked that President Trump is "not a complex man," and lauded those who have figured out that praise is the best way to get the leader's cooperation, reports The Hill.
In an appearance on CNN's 'State of the Union' with Jake Tapper, Santorum said he gives Republican lawmakers credit for lavishing compliments upon the president following the passage of the GOP tax bill.
At that December 20 event, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell noted, "this has been a year of extraordinary accomplishment for the Trump administration," and House Speaker Paul Ryan said the passing of the bill, "could not have been done without exquisite presidential leadership."
"This will be remembered as a pivotal moment in the life of our nation, a day when the Congress answered [President Trump's] call and made history," Vice President Mike Pence added.
Santorum said of that display, "They want to tee up the president to say, 'hey, look what happens when you win. You get lots of people saying lots of nice things, you feel good'…this was more of a pep rally for the president."
Tapper soon after commented, "The Japanese…have figured out how to deal with President Trump. You compliment him, you flatter him, you work with him behind the scenes, you don't take a stand against him publicly."
"Look…Donald Trump is not a complex man. I think that's fairly certain," Santorum replied.
In a mid-November New York Times op-ed, Thomas Friedman suggested Japan is not the only nation to have unlocked the secret to handling the U.S. president.
Friedman wrote, in part, that China's President Xi Jinping "…has been brilliant at playing Trump, plying him with flattery and short-term trade concessions and deflecting him from the real structural trade imbalances with China."
