Violence To Protest A The Release Of A Russian Movie

Religious conservatives in Russia are burning cars to protest the release of the movie "Matilda."

The Russian movie, which is not based on the Roald Dahl book, is a historical drama about the love affair between the future Tsar Nicholas II and a ballet dancer. But Nicholas II is canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, so his depiction in the film is seen by some as blasphemous.

Since the film was announced, its director has received death threats, and protestors have vowed to burn down cinemas that screen "Matilda." But not everyone is against the movie. A group of Russian ballerinas released a tribute video in support. And while some cinemas have decided not to show the film, "Matilda" will still be released nationwide on Oct. 26.
