The goods available for door-to-door transit via drone are Mexican food and medicine.
Project Wing is working with restaurant chain Guzman y Gomez, Chemist Warehouse drugstores, and a number of residents along the Australian Capital Territory and New South Wales border.
The area is a rural one, but has enough buildings, trees, animals and people to give developers an opportunity to fine-tune its drones’ sensors, reports the Verge.
“The sensors on our aircraft are responsible for identifying obstacles that might appear during a flight or delivery, like a car parked in an unexpected spot, or outdoor furniture that’s been moved," James Ryan Burgess, one of the project’s leaders, noted. "The more test deliveries we do, exposing the sensors on our aircraft to new delivery locations, the smarter our aircraft’s algorithms will one day become at picking a safe spot for deliveries.”
While many lucky Australians in the test area are probably enjoying drone-delivered burritos as we speak, due to regulations and a need for drone traffic control systems, it will likely be a while before Americans can do the same.
